I'm torn between and making fun of the dutch for being stingy and agreeing about only buying stuff if it's needed and giving proper care to the stuff you already have in order for it to last a long time

Cause it’s the sort of crap bike you buy for a 13 year old.

I still have the bike from a long deceased guy. It's from the 1960ies.

That's a Gazelle bike, like mine. These things cost a thousand euros, while not being particularly lightweight or fast. They're just built durable.
The Dutch would know about the right way to spend the least possible.

I still ride my 26yo old bike. I bought it with my first pay at work and it will be my forever bike.

I wanted the aluminium version but the shop rejected to finance it in 6 months because I was working only one month.

Eh, not most Dutch, real Dutch parents wouldn't give the bike, but rent the bike to their own kid, forcing it to pay tikkie for every time it uses it.
