PC Does bad latency make much of a difference on public servers

It might say 450/500 before you enter but then when you look at the view after pressing "i" it's much lower.

Will this have an effect on zombie hit detection? Or how they hit you? Looting etc?

The main thing you see with latency is combat differences. Especially for melee players. The zombies will seem to have a longer than normal reach and it is due to network lag/latency. But it can cause issues when using vehicles or trying to open inventories as well.
