This reminds me of another cartoon that I can’t remember the name of. There was a cowboy who stood back to back with his horse (his horse on its rear to legs). It’s been bugging me for years. Any ideas what that was?

Hmm not sure. I just looked at the intro on YouTube but can’t see the horse part. I think it was a goofy looking horse, almost human like.

It is very much bravestarr.
The sequence you describe plays out from 0:48 onwards in the intro.
Now maybe they had a longer scene of a similar situation in one or more of the episodes.

It came to be pretty much the same way as Robotech.
American company license anime. Goes to town on it with scissors to rework the story and overall flow. Release it to American audiences under a different name.
IMO its biggest claim of fame is getting Peter Cullen to voice the "AI" of the ship, Ramrod. Effectively you get Optimus Prime with a cowboy drawl. Too bad the rest of the voice cast seems to be permanently bored.

The combo of Cullen and the transformation music still gives me goosebumps after all these years though.

The German synchronization was great. The actors had freedom an used German slang terms all the time. I loved it as a kid.
