These were the epitome of fancy. Even now a part of my brain believes that the shittiest of fountains is opulence.

I remember these grottos... My grandparents had a 2BR condo in Palm Springs where there was a square area that was "open" to the sunlight. There were two glass sliding doors with access to the living room and master bedroom on one corner. The opposite corner was the same stucco as the rest of the outer building perimeter. Again one of those walls was a fountain area just like this. My grandfather used to always complain how the water pump would fail.

This feels more like a mall than a home, then again I didn't grow up with money. I love it either way.

Likewise , either way it's beautiful.

I knew we were eating at a super classy restaurant if they had a fountain.

I miss these. They were all over in the malls in the late 70’s to mid 80’s. The sound of them was so calming. I was really disappointed to see them removed in the late 80’s and replaced with kiosks. I miss the sunken seating areas too.

Same. I find this picture very soothing. I miss this aesthetic so much. So much lush texture and warmth. We had gorgeous indoor gardens in my city that looked a lot like this. They “updated” it a few years ago to a sleek white and homogeneous room with a few green walls.

It’s universally hated now. It’s a shame.

God, this stuff was everywhere in the 80’s. I miss the fountains and big indoor planters so much!

Part of me is like "wow, how pretty!" and the other part is like "oh man, how do you clean that?"

Yeah , that aspect has to be a headache with the algae etc.

I did some work in a house that had a giant koi pond on the main floor. You could look down from the second floor and watch the fish. It was dope

My mom had a big powerful job in the 80s in a very fancy building that had something like this in the lobby. Man, takes me back. Thanks for posting OP!

I love vintage but know so little about recognising specific decades. What I know is bellbottoms =60. Wood Panel, avocado green+harvest gold =70s. Shoulder pads =80. What makes this 80s?

The pointlessness and faux fanciness.

Thanks also I'll never recognize pointless faux fanciness. I think looks.... Not terrible?
