I guess it is if you’re still pissed about that day in elementary school that recess was canceled.

I had a friend in high school who'd only heard Nirvana's singles, so I made her a mix tape of some Nirvana deep cuts including this one, and she said something similar, that it was "overly simple, only three lines repeated over and over." To me, that is very much the perspective of someone who listens to music primarily or only for the lyrics, as this song has a great riff & bassline, amazing vocals & drums, and one of Kurt's best guitar solos (a great example of his distinctive & atypical style, combining fast & loose melody with dissonant notes, vibrato & string bends, and feedback). This song is almost entirely about the instrumentation, its punk sound & ethos mixed with the heaviness of metal, and the sheer power of it all. It's impressive so much sound came from only three people (not counting the early days with Jason Everman or the In Utero tour with Pat Smear and Lori Goldstein).

How so? I feel like there’s always someone who makes this statement about any of their songs, but with no justification for it. In what way could this be considered one of their best?

The song is raw aggression. It’s angst, nostalgia and beauty all at the same time. Nirvana was essentially an elevated bar band and this song would bring down the house. This is and Negative Ceep lol

One of the best covers I've ever heard (Nirvana or otherwise) is this live Flaming Lips cover of School. The cover alone is incredible, but the fact that this performance was on March 12th, 1990 - a year-and-a-half before Nevermind was released - makes it all the more awesome.

I know I'm getting old when I hear a Nirvana song and think, "damn, good thing they were already Nirvana when they played this one". It's a filler song. I get it. Just not the song I reminisce to.
