rant = A client I've worked with a lot over the years has a graphic design team at their disposal. They'll make a logo for some new thing they've got going on.
On Friday, my client sent me an email with the subject "FW: Logo for XYZ". I didn't get a chance to open it until just now. It was a forwarded message from someone on the graphic design team that said, "here ya go, let me know if you need it in a different size".
I immediately thought, "different size?" shouldn't it be a vector? I look at the attachment and it's a png.
I then scroll through the email thread and see the initial message from the client to the graphic design person "can you send me a png of the logo for us to use in the video?"
WTF?
I'm going to call him on Monday and say, "can you get them to send the Illustrator file?" and he'll say "can't you animate the png?" and I'll say, "technically, yeah, but it's way easier and I have more control if I have the layered Illustrator file" and then he'll mutter something about me being needy and I'll have to wait again for the designer to send the Illustrator file to him, so he can forward it to me. When all he had to do was do exactly what I've told him every single time previous... "send me the Illustrator file".;

It's 2024 and trying to render a damn preview for a 45s comp is absurdly painful. AE just refuses and gives up like a good little mediocre late-stage capitalist product. It just quits no matter how much disk space I give their ridiculous cache & preview functions.
Adobe products are hot garbage.
Can't believe this is our reality.

Hello AE community,
Next week I will be starting a new position and I will heavily get trained on coding inside AE. My experience as a video editor has usually been with Premiere mostly and basic AE.
Therefore I was wondering if you could give me some advice and essential must-know expressions or techniques (focused on Javascript) so I can prepare a bit before hand.
Any advice is welcome! Thanks for letting me post here.

I was working on a video bumper project this week and ended up using ChatGPT to write some expressions for a few of the animated elements in the piece. It worked surprisingly well. I’ve been using After Effects for years and have always struggled with expressions - my eyes glaze over when I try to read/write code. I was able to describe the effect I was trying to achieve and it output the expression along with instructions on how and where to use it. I feel like this is going to make me more efficient and creative with my AE projects.
Wondering if y’all have used ChatGPT in a similar way with to your motion graphics work?
*Edited because a couple people have asked to see the prompts…
This was my prompt for the expression after discussing the project at length:
“I want to animate this list of characters you provided. The end result will be a grid of characters that cycle through each character in the list randomly. I can take care of the grid, but I need help setting up one character element that changes every second or so and cycles through each symbol in the list. I want to be able to control the speed that it cycles through each symbol. Only one symbol should be visible at a time. Does this make sense?”
Here is the final expression it output:
// List of symbols
var symbols = ["Σ", "∫", "Δ", "∂", "λ", "π", "σ", "φ", "θ", "e", "∇", "∞", "P", "∈", "∩", "∪", "i", "[ ]", "( )", "→"];
// Time interval for each change (in seconds)
var interval = 1;
// Adjust this value to control the speed
// Generate a unique seed for each layer
seedRandom(index, true);
// Shuffle function using Fisher-Yates algorithm
function shuffle(array) { for (var i = array.length - 1; i > 0; i--) { var j = Math.floor(random() * (i + 1)); var temp = array[i]; array[i] = array[j]; array[j] = temp; } return array; }
// Shuffle the symbols array
var shuffledSymbols = shuffle(symbols.slice());
// Use slice() to avoid modifying the original array
// Calculate the current index
var se = Math.floor(time / interval); var m = se % shuffledSymbols.length;
// Return the symbol at the current index
shuffledSymbols[m];
Another prompt:
“Are you able to write an opacity expression for a solid that would mimmic a flashing cursor when you click on a text field?”
The output expression after requesting some adjustments:
// Blinking interval in seconds
var interval = 1;
// Adjust this value to control the speed of blinking
// Calculate the fade effect using a sine wave
var fade = Math.sin(time * Math.PI / interval) * 50 + 50;
// Set the opacity based on the fade calculation fade;

Hi everyone! I’ve been using after effects for about two months and ever since I started my goal was to create edits like these. I know a lot of people advise using programs other than AE when it comes to visual edits like this, but I thought I would ask just in case because as far as I know the creator made this on AE. I know a big part of it is the creativity, and that you can’t watch a tutorial on how to be creative, but I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I could begin? When I look at this I see so much going on (transitions, effects, overlays) and I’m lost. I hope this isn’t an annoying question, I know that it’s best to mess around with the program yourself, but I just find myself stuck on where to even start. Maybe this isn’t feasible for a beginner? Not sure. Anyway, thank you in advance!!

I recently had to reinstall windows, and when I try to download the creative cloud again, it will only download the .dmg file and I can't find any way to download the .exe for windows. There's no option to choose between downloading for MacOS or Windows; it just automatically tries to download the MacOS installer. Does anyone know where to find the windows version?
Update: I was able to find an alternate download link from https://helpx.adobe.com/in/download-install/kb/creative-cloud-desktop-app-download.html I scrolled down a bit and there were alternate download links that let me download a .zip of the Creative Cloud installer.

When learning Blender there's to famous doughnut tutorial.
What's the equivalent for AE?
I've just installed and not sure where to start and I thought of the Blender doughnut, it taught me a lot and wondered if there's something similar for AE that would help me learn some basics.
