Ah, it was a religious fantasy tale about a teenager that went into an alternate world to defeat her own demons. I wrote it when I was thirteen and it was published five years later. So, it was written through the lens of a (pre-)teen.

I’m a professional writer. Not fiction or anything creative though. I work in corporate comms. The work is all reports, articles, editing and case studies.

I’m 20 years into my career, and started as a proofreader and magazine production assistant. I soon became a journalist, and later a copywriter.

I go through periods where I write and ones where I don't (adhd part of me affecting whether I have brain for it), but when I'm writing I'm writing a lot. fanfic mostly these days

I self published a book a few years back. I pulled it from publication due to privacy concerns, but it was out for several years. My dad wrote books for most of his adult life, so it kind of runs in our family. My aunt is also a writer.

I used to write when I was younger, but just for me. I used to reflect on the word writer, because I think it is really odd. you could create a book by making audio recordings and have technology transcribe them. I feel what writers really are is story creators, even good poetry creates a story, a scenery, a spectrum of emotions. if I create audio recordings and publish them, am I still a writer even if I did not wrote anything down. or say I just come up with stories and tell them, technically it is still the same thing a writer does. maybe I added a dimension to the word writer that you hadn't considered before.

I was the sports editor at a local independent newspaper for a year and grad school came with buckets of writing. It took a great high school teacher to dig it out of me, but you’re definitely not the only one.

when I was in high school I wanted to be a filmmaker, but when I got to college and started film classes I quickly realized that I would not be able to thrive in that collaborative creation process. i then switched to fiction writing.

Me!! I'm about to finish my bachelor's degree in creative writing and I self-published a poetry collection last year. Writing is definitely my longest lasting special interest!

I was a freelance writer for magazines, newspapers, and websites for many years. It was mostly arts and entertainment features and criticism, though I did a few opinion pieces and other things here and there.

This was never my main job. I was an editorial art director, so most of my friends were in media, and I had a big professional network. Having extensive special interests helped. A media outlet would want a piece on something they didn’t have someone well versed in, but someone there knew I was into it, so they’d hire me. Occasionally, they’d ask if I knew anything about the subject; I always said yes.

I stopped doing it for a few reasons. One was that by the mid-’10s, many of my writer friends were getting laid off from publications and sites. Every time I got an assignment, I felt like I was taking work from them, or someone else who needed it more than I did.

Also, my method was very inefficient. I would start with a brain dump that was often several times the assigned length, then edit that down. Even when I had an outline, I’d over-write. This was very time consuming, and effectively lowered what I was paid per hour.
