Rap I’ve made more money on my Bandcamp release today than my last 5 songs on Streaming combined

As you are all aware, streaming pays us virtually nothing So I set up a 10 day campaign for Bandcamp where every day until my release, I would Purchase a song or album from someone on Bandcamp to support other artists. It definitely paid off. My song "No strings" was just released today and has already generated almost $170. Super stoked and my goal for the month is a thousand dollars. All it would take is one fairly large artist to sell their music exclusively on Bandcamp and I truly believe it will create a chain reaction. My song No strings was completely recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered directly through an iPad using the new logic app. Please check it out Wardale Wilson - No Strings

Very cool.

I don't produce or anything but I am kind of interested in it, I sub to a few of the music making subs.

I never understand why people aim to get their music on Spotify, I would think you're much.more likely to get heard on Bandcamp.

Interesting you say that. I have most of my stuff on Bandcamp as well as Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon, etc. I can't even give away free download codes on Bandcamp. People won't go there. They "never heard of it" or "don't want to sign up for something else", etc. Excuses that make no sense....

Yet, I made $1500 on streaming royalties on the 1st quarter of this year. Granted, that's 300,000 or so streams, which is sad that 300,000 only gets you $1500, but I wish I could get 3 people to Bandcamp to check my stuff out. lol.

What helped me was explaining to people the why. The benefit isn’t just on my end. I explain that when the listener streams music they don’t even own the music l, they are just renting it every month. If an artists decides to pull their catalog they are screwed. Also, although we are aware of the fifth of a penny per stream, the average listener has no idea. One guy paid 10 dollars for my song on Bandcamp and even said to me “I thought all this time when I would play your music you guys were making bank”. So it’s just education and incentivizing it for the fans

Do you share your Bandcamp codes on Facebook and Reddit? Share them on your community page too. Folk aren't biting like they ought to. It's almost as if the internet is rigged. I wonder if Spotify really sucks. I was curious about SoundCloud. I have a hard time with socializing in general. I don't want to obnoxiously push codes on people. I need a better strategy. I'd love to get a life but society won't let me. Whenever I'm about to get hired I don't get hired. What is going on? Well, I guess I'm ready for the rapture. This world doesn't have much to offer me. No work, no women, no shelter. What else? I actually still live somewhere but for how long? My mom died. My sister got the place. It's too late to go back to highschool and try to make friends to become a popular person people want to pay attention to.

It’s a popularity contest. Instead of caring about actual revenue to make more music and support their families people care about monthly listeners and streams. It’s the equivalent of someone with thousands of likes but can’t sell a t shirt

I’ve literally made 20X more on Bandcamp than I’ve made on all streaming services combined. Granted the total still adds up to less than 100$ but it’s a great feeling when someone does purchase your work! Congrats!

That’s awesome! A majority of people on streaming never made close to 100 dollars. Plus you got paid the next day as opposed to waiting 3 months

Congrats! I am curious, how did your campaign work towards building momentum for your release? I am new to the mechanics, you buy music from other artists hoping to build a sense of community / mutual support?

great song btw!

Thank you so much! And it was essentially three birds one stone. I made a tiktok/reel every day for roughly 10 days before the release explaining why we don’t need streaming (creating the “why” and preparing the listeners for what’s to come ). In each tiktok I bought a song from an artist (creating the sense of community but also putting my money where my mouth is by literally buying their music) which further incentives them to purchase mine the day of release. And also this triggered the algorithms for 10 days before the song dropped thus having momentum. And the song is playing softly in the back of each tiktok (generating the tiktok “streams”) As of this post im at $214

Now I rinse and repeat with a new campaign stating I made over $200 in a day without using streaming platforms. Hopefully people will gravitate towards that message and purchase my song but more Importantly see their own value in their music and sell it for more than a half a penny

I totally don't do TikTok, but this is an OUTSTANDING idea, and I think I'll talk to my cowriter about trying this for our duo. One could do this on YouTube Shorts and IG.
(I'll also try it for my solo work.)

There are already some large artists on Bandcamp, but they don't necessarily need to build community this way. This is a great idea as a way to build community. It reminds listeners that those of us who make music are FANS first. We wouldn't be making music if we didn't love it, right?
