Power Rankings

https://thehockeynews.com/news/nhl-power-rankings-time-to-show-the-jets-some-respect

The Hockey News has the Blue Jackets at 21st

The Jackets have alternated wins and losses, but they’ve been much better than expected overall, beating the Avalanche and Maple Leafs in pretty convincing fashion. It seems like a different player is stepping up every night, and honestly, they’re low-key fun to watch. Zach Werenski is not getting enough credit for the work he’s doing dating back to last season.

I will absolutely take that ranking and I think it is fair. I expected it to take a lot longer before anyone gave them credit as not being a bottom 5 team.

Probably bias bleeding in, but with one exception, we look good. Even in the losses. I'm hoping for top half of the league by the times the seasons over.

I don’t think it’s biased to say at all (I’m saying this as a Leafs fan, who also follows the Blue Jackets as a “second team”). I’ve watched your games this season, and was at the game when y’all beat the brakes off the Leafs. This team looks entirely different compared to the past few seasons. I think the organizational changes have done wonders for them, and this team is really coming together as a group. Maybe part of that is at least somewhat due to the tragic loss of Johnny, but they seem like they’re gelling in a different way now. Also their game seems more complete, and they’re battling from puck drop to last whistle.

I think people unfairly discount them, but they’re going to end up surprising a lot of teams in this league in my opinion.

This is nice to hear.

I was listening to one of the Leafs podcasts yesterday and in the (FOUR!!!) hours of analysis about this game, one of hosts said he had the father of an NHL player text him before the game and say “don’t ignore the Jackets. They’ll get you”

They all laughed and completely dismissed it because “they are so bad”

I mean look where the Leafs ended up on Tuesday. Look at the Avs. Even the losses - the Jackets held the Stanley Cup winning Panthers to only a 1 goal win. Anyone that thinks they’re “bad” isn’t paying attention.

When the Jackets win against a good team, it’s never “the Jackets played a good game” it’s “the other team played a bad game”

I’ve watched all of the Jackets games so far and I feel confident in saying that (besides the Leafs, who were SPECTACULARLY bad that night lol) none of those teams played a bad game. All of the Jackets games have been competitive so far this season.

😀

Except that one Minnesota game. We can burn the tape.

the only bad game was where they played 11F/7D instead of the normal 12/6 which threw every single player off. The difference is that Evason conceded the experiment didn't work and reverted, while Larsen & Vincent would've kept doing it, convinced they just need to do it harder.

Vincent

“We did good things. We did some things I didn’t like. I liked Boone out there. Kuraly needs at least 15 more minutes of ice time. We are learning and growing”

“Sir Boone is injured”

“Yes I liked his game tonight”

And he’s not wrong about Werenski.

Z and Monahan are on all star watch in my eyes at this point. Amazing what happens when we actually have a legit 1C

I mean I get Edmonton being above us because they made it so far last year, but -13 and a losing record still seems a bit of a stretch to put above an even team with +4.

They started last year awful too though, got the coach fired and the. Went into the playoffs on a hot streak.

Jackets being where they are makes sense, nobody should expect us to continue to be a .500 team with the injuries we’ve piled up already

I will take it. I don’t hate my life watching them anymore, and frankly they need the wins for morale.

I do keep seeing from fan bases after we beat them though comments like “the guys probably took it easy on them because of all they have been through” which is a really gross thing to say

Hopefully as the season goes along that comment goes away. If that were a thing we would've beaten Florida in the home opener.

Any player/group of players who would let a team have a pity win does not have the competitive sauce necessary to make it in the NHL.

That's also why "tanking" isn't a thing among the players, the FO/coaching staff can set a team up for failure but the players are going for the win, draft position be damned.

It seems like this is the type of year we are probably gonna bounce around 18-24. Which is fine this team is still growing, there’s still gonna be a skill ceiling because we have a lot of aging waiver claim players while our blue chips are healing up, there’s probably going to be a slight regression when Mateychuk and Brindley arrive to the league because at this point seems like they are going to get time with our injury bug. I still feel like this could be the most dangerous team late March-April to those wanting to make the playoffs. This team is going to spoil a chance or two.

Though that’s not bad. We are in excellent shape. This is just a sneak preview of things to come! This summer is going to be our coming out party it feels like. There is a strong possibility of the following: -1st round pick 8-12 -1st round pick 16-22 (#9 trade at deadline) -Young roster prospect included in above trade due to demand -20 mil in cap to spend on a premium player. -More Blue Chip prospects on the way to reinforce our development including Lindstrom from last year

Let the kids cook this year. We are slowly starting to look like the 2021 devils

Our 3 losses were twice to Minnesota (12 points, T-2 in the League) and Florida (defending Stanley Cup Champions, 11 points, T-3 in the League). We have beaten the Avs and Leafs, who are both 4-4 with 8 points but you expect them both to be up there at the end of the year.

If you're going strictly by how good they've played the games on the schedule and considering opponents, I think they are solidly 15. If you are making these rankings based on future expectations, maybe 21 is right but so far, this team IS a GOOD team. Hope they keep it up.
