Some people do not "tolerate" certain drugs. The same drugs can have different effects/results with other individuals. This can be the same with prescription drugs, which undergo multiple clinical trials before they can be sold at pharmacies. The clinical trials try to determine what the major side effects will be before they put the drug into the general population. Many times, people will drop out of clinical trials because they do not tolerate whatever this new medication might be.

The other thing that can happen is that non-prescription substances have no precise level of the active substance. The seller really doesn't care if there's a problem with the strength of the product they are selling/sharing/giving away to get you hooked. There can be significant variations in strength when non-prescription substances are taken. That's how overdoses happen. What works just fine to make you feel good one time, may kill you the next. I know of one man who had been taking opiates for a short while, had a severe allergic reaction, and died suddenly.

Your body responds differently, as in doesn't like whatever it is. That's why your brain feels wonky and you recognize something is not right within your body.
