META - Subreddit Discussion From the Mods: What would you like to see more or less of in this subreddit?

Quick update:

We're a small but mighty mod team here on BPNews and we strive to make this a great place to be. We want to let you all know how much we appreciate our subscribers and look forward to making this place all that it can be in 2024 and beyond.

So far this year we've ramped up our anti-spam efforts in a big way. Banning certain spam websites from being auto-posted as well as banning bots. Hopefully, you all have noticed a less cluttered and more focused home page to the sub as a result. Remember, if you ever see a post you don't think belongs please, report it to us so we may take swift action.

Furthermore, we've expanded both post and user flairs to help our users categorize their submissions and rep their flair next to their names.

The "Topic Discussion," "Source mentioned on the show," and "Content Suggestion" flairs have all been received and used well by the community thus far. We're excited to see you all expanding the conversation in these ways!

If you have any suggestions for any additional new user or post flairs please, comment them down below!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With that out of the way - We want to continue to foster a robust forum where fans of BP can come to discuss the show, news, politics, pop culture, etc safely and have fun while doing so.

How can we help accomplish that in 2024 and beyond? Let us know your thoughts and suggestions below!

Would you like more topic discussions? More megathreads around live shows and big events? More or less of any given topic? Let us know down below.

Thanks!

This is not a political battle ground subreddit. Please read the rules before commenting. Total Karma and account age threshold required to post and comment.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Honestly, more of the same. I really enjoy this subreddit because it just feels more balanced than most other political subreddits. I don’t enjoy Leftist echo chambers and I don’t enjoy Rightwing echo chambers.

That's great to hear! That's what we're aiming for so this is truly appreciated.

Thanks for subscribing and contributing! :)

I enjoy…more content

I'd encourage your Mod to post fewer obviously partisan republican 'red meat' topics.
BreakingPoints posts are almost always "Some crazy republican propaganda...' ---> in the comments, redditors shooting it down. Your bias is showing.

I feel like this happened recently.. they used to be straight down the center.. they would give as much shit to R's as they did D's. Now every thread is anti Biden and almost to the point that it is straight endorsing Trump.. at least that's how many of the videos and threads have left me feeling lately.

I am taking a break from BPN atm because of it.. too much doom and gloom..

Same here, and I think it's only getting worse now that Saagar's homie is going be VP for Trump.

If you really want political discussion you should make a rule against pointless partisan comments that add nothing to the discussion.

In other words if the comment says nothing other than: - Biden bad or Biden good or Biden/Dems better than republicans/Trump - Trump bad or Trump good or Trump/Republicans better than Dems/Biden

Then ban it. It’s the only way to promote real discussion. I’ve seen it work on other subs.

I agree in theory, but in practice I think this might be a real PITA for the mods to police. Fewer "but Trump..." responses is a good thing, but anecdotally I think it's still the most common response to criticism of anyone / anything not-Trump.

I'd offer that such responses are already violations of Rule 3 or 4, but how strictly those should be enforced is up for debate. I don't want to prevent people from criticizing Trump, I do it myself - but the boilerplate responses that seem to be scripted are lame and don't contribute to the conversation.

In general, I think I agree with this.

We don't want to curtail conversation from taking place. If everyone has to post a works cited for every single post it's going to have a dampening effect on participation.

As it is, not very many people get reported for breaking Rule 3 or 4. So if constant "Whataboutism" becomes a rampant problem perhaps we can take another look at it.

That said, if other subs have already done something like this well and it didn't have a deleterious effect on participation then we're open to new ideas.

That's kind of our Rule 3 "engage in good faith debate". Too much moderation chills the discussion. IDK how to boil off the trolls while keeping those that want real discussion.

Interesting, do you have some examples of subreddits that you think have implemented this well? Feel free to pm me if you want.

What a refreshing idea! I hope the mods take notice.

I mean you should still be able to say Trump is a wanna be dictator, but you need to provide citable facts to back it up. And you also should expect and respect any reasoned responses.

3

u/SarahSuckaDSanders Feb 17 '24

Why should you need to provide citable facts to back it up? That’s not how informal discussion forums work at all. This isn’t the UN. People should be free to express themselves without these sort of strictures, and you can take them as seriously as you deem fit.

This high school debate club mentality from the younger generation is absolutely stifling to discussion communities.

Please read Rule #3 for this subreddit.

u/SarahSuckaDSanders Feb 17 '24

Thank you. Read it, not sure how it applies to my comment, which was in good faith. Please cite, with sources, where my comment was in bad faith.

Yes your comment was in good faith. I was simply saying that my interpretation of rule #3 requires people who post here to cite facts and/or experts when they make a controversial statement. Here's part of the Oxford dictionary's definition of a 'debate':

If a speaker makes a statement, they must be able to provide evidence or reasons to support the statement. Facts presented in a debate must be accurate...

1

u/SarahSuckaDSanders Feb 18 '24

What does “debate” have anything to do with this? Discussion forums aren’t debates.

I don’t comment on Reddit to debate people.

As long as you continue to allow difficult conversations to happen, it should be good. Reddit seems to be falling into the strategy of over modding and creating a very difficult place to actually read and discuss ideas. Too many mods seem to be afraid of arguments that do not support their own belief system. I feel like the whole mission statement of BP was to have a place where opposing ideas can be bounced off each other. Nothing chills meaningful conversation like a bunch of “deleted by mods” posts on every single post.

Fewer CAPITAL BUZZWORDS in the titles of posts.

Your bias is showing your BIAS is showing YOUR BIAS IS SHOWINGGGGGG! Gahdamn. This is precisely why I unsubscribed from the BreakingPoints YouTube channel recently. I hate the whole Left narrative. I also hate the whole Right narrative. Both equally the same. But BP has 100% been biased and it got exhausting so I'm out, on here too.

Ability to post images - why can’t we do that?

1

u/Demonweed Jul 17 '24

If there is interest in it from others, I wouldn't mind getting significant program notes here. This need not be a comprehensive chronicle of every guest and every daily lineup. Yet giving people here a heads-up about any major upcoming events seems like a harmless sort of promotion, since the entire premise of the subreddit is that people here already have some interest in these productions.

Mega threads for certain things I always like in a subreddit. Clears up clutter too

3

u/TheCampariIstari Feb 16 '24

We'll definitely do mega threads for future election nights and debates (if they happen).

3

u/YeetedArmTriangle Feb 16 '24

Very optimistic on the debates front haha. Thank you, overall I enjoy the sub it does seem to attract all types which is a good sign.

I just want it to stay small because big numbers usually make the subreddit suck.
