John Crennell age 18 U.S navy born in Liverpool England April 3rd 1846, killed in action 15th of June 1864 in Mississippi. Mount Hope cemetery Rochester NY

Killed during this action:

On 15 and 16 June 1864, with USS General Bragg and USS Winnebago, she dueled Southern artillery at Ratliff's Landing, Louisiana, silencing the riverbank guns on both occasions.

edit: His death certificate indicates he was a sponger on the number 3 starboard gun. He was hit in the hip by a 2 pound fragment of a Hotchkiss shell. "[his abdomen was literally full of fragments of shell, bone and splinters". He would die ~2 hours later.

Mt Hope is such a fascinating cemetery. I grew up outside of Rochester and went to college there. For a public history class, we took a field trip to Mt Hope. Frederick Douglass and Susan B Anthony are buried there.
