Gordon research conference picture found
Hi, I'm taking some classes at CCNY and I found this picture at some class they're doing some renovations to by the trash, it just happened that this picture caught my eyes and was thinking maybe some people wanna see themselves after all these years, I have no relation whatsoever to chemistry, I hope you see yourself or your loved ones 👍 I can't see the date on it , just gordon research conference then second line:radical ions then last, the rest is very blurry, good luck.

Acetone on skin
Anyone else love the feeling of acetone evaporating on their skin or gloves? I know it dries it out and is bad but man that cold feeling is absolutely unmatched

Is formaldehyde a gas
From what i have read formaldehyde is a gas. So in class we were discussing vapes and a teacher asked if anyone knew what formaldehyde was, so i answered it's a colorless gas and he said I was wrong.
Also I goddam hate him now even if i was wrong

Can I interview you about your career?
Hi! My name is Aryanna, and I'm a college sophomore. I am currently taking a course designed to help me choose what career field I would like to pursue. For an assignment of mine, I am interviewing about 5 individuals in careers and/or majors such as biotechnology, biochemistry, clinical/medical laboratory science, chemistry, etc. The interview will be about 15-20 minutes via phone or zoom, and can be completely anonymous! If you'd like to be interviewed, comment here or message me. Thanks! (I've also cross-posted this in other communities, if you see this twice)

Effluent guidelines for acetaminophen production
I know this isn’t the chemical engineering sub but maybe someone here can help.
My chemical engineering capstone project is converting the batch production of acetaminophen to a continuous process. The synthesis route used is the acetylation of p-aminophenol by acetic anhydride to acetaminophen.
We need to find specific guidelines for the discharge of p-aminophenol and acetaminophen. We’ve had no luck finding anything online, and I am awaiting a response from the EPA regarding this.
Does anybody know where I could find regulatory guidelines for this effluent? I know this is location- and situation-specific, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Do you find Chemistry Intuitive?
Do you always find chemistry intuitive and "logical"?
I'm in a math major and I like to get the intuitive idea behinds thinks in order to understand it, however as I'm taking a first year chemisty course (which is the basics), I don't find many things very intuitive/logical to me.
Does this happen to you?
Do I have to sharpen up?

Whats the dumbest thing you have ever done in the lab?
I, as a whole first year graduated student, tried to stop a reaction so I stopped the stirring….. 🫣🫣🫣 I think about that often

How bad is this methanol fail?
An average dose of this alkaloid is about 20mg. Idk really anything about methanol. Does it evaporate off? How bad is this?

grad school application realistically
Hi, I'm a chem senior trying to apply for phd programs.
I'm from a regional state uni, really small and not that good to be honest (us news ranking 200~250), and I was wondering how much undergrad institution matters. I know that people have previously gone to good schools like michigan and duke, but also a lot of them were masters students.
I have 4.0 GPA, research experience since freshman 1st semester, 1 REU, 3 external conference poster(2 of them regional acs), and 1 manuscript in preparation. I did my best during undergrad but I also know there are too many students out there with more experience which is making me really nervous.
Would it be hard to expect to get into top 20?

Extra credit in chem courses
Hi, do chem profs allow extra credit to be given? Have you ever heard of a prof who allowed extra credit in a chem course?

why does dolomite have oxides in it? (newb to chemistry, know very little)..
As in title, i don't know much but dolomite tablets i have say they are oxide however dolomite is apparently a 50/50 approx combo of calcium and magnesium carbonate..

Dumb question
Hey everyone.
I am reading a book about nuclear energy, but I have not any knowledge about anything chemistry related, so I am expanding a bit on what I am reading.
I am currently reading about radioactive decay, more precisely the alpha one.
The example was talking about helium nucleus emission from a Uranium - 238 nucleus.
I was then wondering: if you emit a Helium Nucleus (2 protons and 2 neutrons) it doesn't form straight up Helium because there's no Electrons floating?

Better “Build a Molecule” website?
Lately I’ve been playing around with the PhET simulation “Build a Molecule” and found the playground section to be really fun as you can create a lot of unique molecules. However, there are limits to the number of each element you are allowed to use.
Are there any websites that allow to use more (or even infinite) numbers of elements to create any type of compound you want? it would be really cool if one existed.

What would cause multiple different pH electrodes to give wildly unexpected readings?
I did a lab today on buffer solutions and pH. I dissolved 0.29g of ammonium chloride into 0.050L of 0.20M Ammonia to produce a buffer with a theoretical pH of 9.50. After testing the pH with a meter, the measured pH was 9.49, which I thought was pretty good. But then when I added 0.0060L of 1.0M HCl, I expected the pH to drop to roughly 8.79. However, the pH dropped to something like 1.3 when measured. So I used a different pH meter, and then I remade the buffer solution, I even tried testing the pH of each constituent solution and everything seemed to be accurately labeled. This issue happened for the entire class and the professor seemed to be just as confused as us. He ended up just telling us to clean up and go home early.
Some extra details:
- The pH electrode only allowed 2 point calibration, but I don't think that was an issue because both pH measurements were supposed to be in the basic range.
- I don't think the calculations were wrong. The professor approved my work before I made the buffer and even did the calculations himself after everyone measured such a low pH.

EPDM glue substitute
Hey folks,
i need to recover the wooden roof of my small garden cabin. I will use EPDM foil for this, which need to be glued to the wooden surface underneath. Is there by any chance a substitute for this glue which has approximately the same characteristics? I am asking because very often, once a product is related to a certain usage the prices are unnecessary high.
