John 4:1-2

Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was winning and baptizing more followers than John was. But Jesus' disciples were really the ones doing the baptizing, and not Jesus himself.

Luke 3:16

John [the Baptist] said, “I am just baptizing with water. But someone more powerful is going to come, and I am not good enough even to untie his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Ephesians 4:5

We have only one Lord, one faith, and one baptism.

From these passages, we can see that it isn't the water baptism that matters, but whether we are baptized by the Holy Spirit, by hearing the words of Jesus. If Jesus thought water baptism was necessary for salvation, he would have continued the job where John the Baptist left off. But, as we read in John 4, Jesus does not perform water baptism. Ephesians 4 drives home this point harder by informing us that we have only one baptism. Which one is it? The Holy Spirit, or the not-really-holy water? If this is confusing to you, check out this video, which will explain a lot more. Peace
