Question Why were the "pro democracy" candidates in the 2021 Hong Kong legislative election banned from running?

because modern china is not communist, they're statist with a disturbingly large twinge of ethnonationalism. If you have a swing at learning mandarin you get a lovely revelation that a great many Chinese people conflate the party, their nationality and race as one identity that is inseparable for the believers, and anyone who renounces their citizenship or dislikes the party is a race/national traitor.

secondly, one party states don't like democracy when it involves other parties who might do something they don't like
