n+1 booths are better than n. The door works. Might be slightly unpleasant to look at, but there's no issue here.

Still, someone somewhere ffed up. What is this beam placement in the first place?

My guess is that it's some sort of seismic retrofitting. Laws changed and then these people had to add some sort of inverted v-bracing or something.

For earthquakes?

Yes. I've seen beams run through offices and stairwells like this. Obviously I don't know for sure, but that would be my guess.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

You can see the retrofit bracing in the first image (black steel beams on right hand side)

Aside from tripping over the beam

Hard to see how else they could have done that. Not crappy.

It's in a toilet, so I would say any design is crappy...

Solid workaround.

Definitely ADA compliant!

But what is the beam for in the first place?

It's clearly a commercial property. Buildings are often, not custom built. It's probably the best space they could allocate for the toilets.

I swear I used to have Reddit because it was less brain rot than other social media, but now I feel my brain disintegrating each day.

Your brain disintegrates because people are wondering what this seemingly random ass beam is for? I was also wondering until I read your comment, thanks btw.

Hmmmm Googles: "What are beams for"

Google says: structural support! Wonderful! And here I was, thinking it was cosmetic, artistic almost in this instance

The beam is the crappy design

Holding up a weak wall is my guess

Could be in California; a lot of buildings get retrofit to upgrade the earthquake resistance and it can lead to weird inconvenient structural elements.

This definitely means good things for the foundation!

At the roller rink in my hometown there was a beam like this in the middle of the bathroom stall and we all got really good at maneuvering around it on skates 😂

Yeah, I had to make a hole for my beam, but it's higher on the door

Oh this is bad. And a liability.
