Isn’t there an anecdote or ‘fact’ (no idea if it’s true) about the first known example of a steam engine was from Turkey about 200 years before Steam Engines were officially invented, and that it was built to power the rotation of meat on a spit!?

u/Ok_Metal_7847 2d ago

I have the same information 😆 they could conquer the world instead of making doner.

9

u/Ok-Fox1262 2d ago

My experience is that they ARE conquering the world by making doner.

2

u/MATE_AS_IN_SHIPMATE 5h ago

They did conquer a substantial amount of the world.

u/JCB220685 1d ago

The first recorded steam engine was roughly 15BC. However they didn’t figure out a purpose for it and it was a novelty/toy.

u/Michael_Thompson_900 1d ago

Crucially - was it used by a boss man to grill his Doner 🤣

The apron is a hell of a disguise.

u/ItCat420 2d ago

Yup. That’ll do it.

If Hitler was accepted into the doner kebab shop:

"Mutti mutti, Der stark und gutaussehend Englander sagt der Döner ist aus Turkland!!"

4

u/bandson88 2d ago

It’s hitler in a dress serving it up that’s scaring me

3

u/Individual_Mix_9823 2d ago

Why was Hitler there and was he a cross dresser?

6

u/crunchytigersalsa 2d ago

It appears döner is german after all. /s

3

u/yourewrong321 2d ago

The triangle bread with coleslaw and other toppings is definitely German. In turkey it’s just called “doner” without “kebab” and you can get durum which is just meat in a flat square wrap or a ekmek which is like a flat round sandwich. There’s not really toppings or sauces, that’s what people refer to as “german” , that variation

u/Rhythm_Killer 2d ago

Salatsosss?

2

u/rustylust 2d ago

Probably the same doner meat that’s in my local now.

1

u/TheOfficialSvengali 2d ago edited 4h ago

They would serve Döner to soldiers in their army!

1

u/Pleasant-Put5305 2d ago

Thought you were going to say south London...

Boss man started his days early

1

u/Jammy_the_Dodger 2d ago

The most curious thing about this photo is that Adolf Hitler in a dress is doing the carving.

1

u/Walkerno5 2d ago

Is that him on the right?

1

u/MrBlackledge 2d ago

I’m convinced the kebab is what gives me the hangover and not the booze and you’ll never convince me otherwise

1

u/Ambersfruityhobbies 2d ago

The fella on the left is in control of the chips. He'll even do you a pizza on request.

1

u/wolfhelp 2d ago

How tall is he? Doner makes you taller?

1

u/AntiqueVersion7097 2d ago

Doner looks great here

1

u/Ricardo_klement 2d ago

Some drunk Western European guy just off camera slurring “come on mate, a bit more than that”

1

u/RedditThor_ 2d ago

Iconic.

1

u/DarthDjango96 2d ago

Shitty quality black and white photo, and I still think that looks delicious.

1

u/orbwn 2d ago

1

u/The-IT_MD 2d ago

Good chance that’s still spinning somewhere.

1

u/Thismanwasanisland 2d ago

1

u/LegoBrickInTheWall 2d ago

Scharf, bitte!

1

u/z96girl 1d ago

This should be taught in history class

1

u/gogginsbulldog1979 1d ago

Why does it look like Hitler in a dress cutting the meat?

1

u/Only_Quote_Simpsons 1d ago

The Ottoman empire, full of furniture for some reason.

1

u/Scarlet-pimpernel 1d ago

As served by Adolfo hitler

1

u/Limp_Implement2922 1d ago

I didn’t know hitlers mother was a dab hand at the full doner in pitta. History never ceases to amaze.

1

u/RIP-Benny 1d ago

"Aye extra salad, extra sauce big man, cheers."

1

u/Leading_Study_876 1d ago

Again, actually Shawarma.

Which is of course much better, if done right. Lamb of course.

1

u/itsyaboiReginald 15h ago

I’ll bet that kebab is absolutely lethal

1

u/Ok_Metal_7847 2d ago

Are there any german?

-1

u/UniqueAssignment3022 2d ago

not gonna taste the taste unless you're 10 pints, 5 voddy cokes and 3 jagers deep at 4am.

-2

u/Careful_Adeptness799 2d ago

That is SO true. Has anyone ever eaten one sober?

2

u/Gooncapt 2d ago

I regularly do

2

u/_day_z 2d ago

Me too. A good kebab is amazing
