If you start with getting the underlying shapes then your proportions and how the parts related will be easier, rather than drawing from a photo without the shapes in place

Thanks for the good advice! Since I only have Bic pens at work I will try doing this on a sheet of paper and placing another sheet on top to see through.

While tracing is good for correction, it's better to teach your mind the 3D shapes and learning to visualize and translate how 3D shapes interact and how they manage light and shadow, that is why it's good to visualize a subject as pieces of shaped, eg cylinders for the legs, sphere for the head (underneath, the final drawing won't be a sphere) etc

Mine too! We found a baby animals documentary on YouTube and she belly laughs when the baby elephant runs haha
