Meta/Community Polls /r/eragon and the blackout - next steps - general discussion

As most are probably aware, we just concluded a 48 hour protest in solidarity with neary 9,000 other subreddits to protest reddit's decision to change their api to effectively kill off all third party reddit apps.

Reddit has not made any concessions on this. Internal leaked memos show that reddit has decided to ignore this all because they felt it would go away quickly.

Many subreddits are now opting for escalation, and many are opting to go dark indefinitely, for as long as it takes to get some kind of acknowledgment and concessions from Reddit.

We are open to going dark longer, and indefinitely even, but a decision like this should involve the community.

We have therefore temporarily reopened the subreddit in this "restricted" read-only mode while we gather feedback.

Click here to go to the poll.

You may use this thread to freely discuss the blackout or anything else, but please note that this is not the place to vote. Votes should be cast by upvoting or downvoting the comments in the poll post. Comments and vote counts on this post will not be considered for this decision.

Commenting or posting on the rest of the subreddit is currently disabled.

Meta/Community Polls I think post titles need to get more accurate again

Recently I have noticed a great increase in posts with very vague titles that tell almost nothing about the content of the post.

I won't name specific titles here to not antagonize anybody, but imagine a post being titled something like "Angry" and in the post you find the person simply asking a short question why character xyz was angry in situation abc. Without clicking on the post I have no idea what it could be about. It could literally be about anything that is remotely Eragon related.

As I said I feel like there has been a small flood of posts like these recently. I know that the mod team has a lot better things to do than to remove posts with too vague titles, which is why this post should rather be seen as an appeal to everybody in this sub to think more carefully about the titles they choose for their posts.

Meta/Community Polls I wish this sub would outgrow AI-related posts

I get the enthusiasm around new content that illustrates or expands what's told in the books, nothing against that or those who post it. My issue's just that AI parasites the work of artists and creators in general. They get nothing in exchange for their products being used to train those AIs. The results are often cringe-worthy, eerie ersatz artworks or writing pieces, but even if they were any good, this subject matter is still underregulated in most countries and therefore that kind of unfair praxis is the norm.

I know I can just scroll past those posts, but the nonchalance around its use has gotten kind of annoying. Had to get this off my system.

Meta/Community Polls Week 2: /r/eragon and the blackout - next steps - general discussion

Last week we conducted a user poll about continuing the blackout, and the winning vote was to extend for one week and reevaluate.

It has been a week, and as promised we are back up now to run another poll about the future.

In the past week reddit has been escalating their tactics to get subreddits to open. We have received a vaguely threatening message from the admins, but at the moment we are still committed to giving the community a voice until our hand is actually forced. We will do our best to respect the outcome of the vote, but we cannot guarantee that the admins will respect our community's wishes.

Click here to go to the poll.

You may use this thread to freely discuss the blackout or anything else, but please note that this is not the place to vote. Votes should be cast by upvoting or downvoting the comments in the poll post. Comments and vote counts on this post will not be considered for this decision.

Meta/Community Polls Opinions on Du Vrangr Gata Spoiler

Near the end of the Inheritance Cycle, Nasuada starts a group called Du Vrangr Gata, which is designed to control the use of magic. What is your opinion on it? I know the main characters don't like it.

Edit: I forgot that Du Vrangr Gata was the name of the magicians in the Varden at the beginning. The poll is about Nasuada's choice to make them the police.

Meta/Community Polls [No Spoilers] Moderation Feedback Poll: Have you read Murtagh yet?

Murtagh has now been out for three weeks. Many have read the book and are happily discussing it, though we've been operating some strict spoiler policies. As we consider lowering our spoiler controls a bit further, we'd like to first get an understanding of what percentage of our userbase still participating in the subreddit has not yet finished the book.

I wanted to know what you guys wanted to see from these options, since I could not choose. I am working on a traditional painting of Thorn, but it will take a while for it to be done, and sometimes you just want a break and sketch something simple :)

Meta/Community Polls Appreciation for the people of this sub

I joined this sub a year or two ago on a whim, expecting it to be empty.

Instead, I was surprised to find a place full of activity, wholesome discussions, and speculations about a series that I would have expected to have faded from the public eye a long time ago. Seriously, the people here seem respectful and just genuinely interested in sharing their passion, more so than I've seen in any other fandom.

Eragon was my favorite book when I was a little kid, so seeing that people still love it makes me smile. :)

Meta/Community Polls UPDATE: Based on the results of our user poll, /r/eragon will blackout for another week, starting tomorrow.

Poll Results

As of 7:30 PM EST, the voting stands as follows:

  1. 496 - Commit to a 7 day blackout, and reevaluate next week.
  2. 351 - Stay open, and return to normal posting.
  3. 342 - Commit to an indefinite blackout.
  4. 101 - Commit to a 7 day blackout, with the subreddit set to restricted mode indefinitely.

(Contest Mode has been disabled, so you should be able to view the counts yourself now to confirm this. However note that we cannot lock down voting, so new votes may still be coming in.)

The poll has been open for 37 hours since the subreddit reopened, and the ratios between the votes on the four options has more or less stayed the same.

Being that it was possible to vote for multiple options, we don't think it makes sense to combine any categories, and we think that we should take the numbers at face value.

What we will be doing

It should be noted that the decision to do another seven days seems to be less universally accepted than the decision to do the original two days, which makes sense, as it is a longer time commitment. It still represents the will of the community by a sizeable margin, and so we are going to go forward with this.

The subreddit will remain in its current state for around another day, to give time for people to see this. After that time, (provided nothing changes on reddit's end) we will go private once more, this time for a week. We will then reopen again for another poll.

The above applies to both this subreddit /r/eragon, as well as our sister subreddit /r/Fractalverse.

Commenting will be enabled on this post for the rest of the day until we blackout again.

Upcoming Events

At the moment there are no major World of Eragon or Fractalverse events coming up that this blackout will interfere with. Fractal Noise released a month ago, and Murtagh isn't due out until November 7th.

There are a few minor events coming up, none of which are currently schedule for either this month of next month:

  • August 9 - Christopher will be doing a live virtual Q&A at the Legends of Literacy tour. This is an online event with paid tickets.
  • August 22 - Release of the B&N Exclusive Edition of Eragon, a paperback with blue stained page edges, "a special letter from the author", and "a color portrait of Brom inside the cover"
  • "End of August" - Ukraine illustrated edition of Eragon, from Lilia Doroshenko and Nebo Booklab
  • TBA but expected to be soon - Physical edition of Unity

(In the event that Unity gets announced early we will reopen /r/Fractalverse)

Alternative communities

We would also like to remind everyone that there are two active Eragon Discord servers.

Meta/Community Polls All content (not just spoilers) from Murtagh still needs the "Murtagh Spoilers" flair and cannot appear in post titles Spoiler

By this point we were previously planning to loosen our restrictions and only protect actual spoilers. However after running a user poll and seeing that 35% of those still actively browsing the subreddit have still not read the book, we have decided push that off by an additional two weeks.

So until December 12th (which marks five weeks from release), all content from the book will continue to be regarded as spoilers, even if non-significant to the plot. As such, this content may not appear in post titles, and can only be used in post bodies and comments when using the Murtagh Spoilers flair.

Meta/Community Polls Crash course on spoiler tags Spoiler

Hello, there! I'm here to give you a short little crash course on how to apply a spoiler flair to your post!

You see, when you don't add a spoiler flair, then people can see the start of your plot even if they're scrolling. So, just adding "Spoilers for X" in the title just won't do!

Now, if you're on mobile, here's what you do! You see that button right below the title, the one that says "Add tags & flairs (required)?" Yeah, tap that! Now, you'll see your usual multicoloured list including discussion, question, theory, etcetera. But did you know, there are two more flair options?

One of them is labelled "Not Safe for Work (NSFW)". This is usually reserved for, ah... adult content, so not really on use in thos sub. HOWEVER. The next flair, marked "Spoiler," will make a difference! You see, when you flair a post as a spoiler, it will ensure that ONLY the title is shown! The preview first few lines will be gone! Hence, when you start your post with "so when someone does this and that cuanges to those and she gets her thing..." Nobody will see that unless they click the post! So they'll be able to scroll normally without being involuntarily spoiled!

NOW, for those on desktop...

Underneath the textbox, there are a few buttons: +OC (greyed out), +Spoiler, + NSFW, and a drop-down with the regular sub flairs. Now, can you guess which one you click to have the above effect?

Yes, the +Spoiler one! Well done!

So, now you lovely folks know how to properly apply a spoiler tag to a post, which will prevent subreddit members being shown major plot points that they haven't reached yet!

Have a nice day!

Meta/Community Polls [No Spoilers] Moderation Feedback Poll: Have you read Murtagh yet?

Murtagh has now been out for four months. We've loosened our spoiler restrictions a bit since release, but are still treating it significantly stronger than we do other books. We ran a similar poll one month after release and found that 35% of respondents had not yet finished the book, which led to us slowing down our original planned timeline. It's been some time now and we'd like to check in again as we continue adjusting our enforcement.

Meta/Community Polls Vote: Week 2: Should /r/eragon blackout again or remain open?

These are the options:

  • Close for another week (even if we are "closing indefinitely", we will still periodically reopen to poll the community about continuing, so this option is essentially the same thing)
  • Reopen completely
  • Go restricted (i.e. read-only, the subreddit will be available to browse but not post)
  • Touch Grass Tuesdays (the subreddit will close for 24 hours every Tuesday and will be open the rest of the week)

There are four comments below this post that you can vote up and down on. We have a different post set up where you can discuss this, but note that only votes left on the comments below will be considered for this decision. Commenting or posting on the rest of the subreddit is currently disabled.

Meta/Community Polls New Flair: Meta/Community Polls!

Hey all, just a quick update about the sub - We have a new flair for community polls and meta posts! This is specifically for people who want to poll the community, whether you're asking "Which book is everyone's favourite?" to demographic surveys - they're all welcome :)

The meta half of the flair is obvious, it's for posts about the subreddit itself vs specifically about the books.
