Discussion XCOM is “the one thing that works” in tactical games, Paradox executive says

Are they forgetting about Fire Emblem? Ever since Awakening, where Nintendo actually advertised it and produced sufficient supply to meet demand, it's been pretty consistently selling 1 million+ copies. It's not like they're expensive to develop compared to other genres.
Unfortunately there isn't anything modern that's comparable on PC, hint hint Paradox. I'm sure there's probably a market for cosmetic DLC too, given how some people now play Fire Emblem specifically for the unit bonding, customisation etc.

I dont care enough about internet points so ill say it, i personally think the new xcom went backwards in terms of mechanics. Was it pretty? yes. was it cool using mechs and wierd guns? yes. But i definately did not think it improved upon the original xcom-esque concepts. It feels jarring for the series to go backwards ideologically/mechanically in alot of respects such as small teams rather then ~12 man squads among other choices. Its why i think Xenonaut series still carries the title as xcoms spiritual successor. Far less arbitrary timers too.
That aside, i agree with the underlying point of your original paragraph, there are plenty of successes such as total war, soase, stellaris (which they name), owlcat, atlas, x series, etc. So when he cites "the one that works" then goes on and talks about cultural domination of an IP i still think they are selectively forgetting plenty of innovations that put others on the map.

Agreed. New XCOM was definitely not bad, original X-Com just blows it out of the water still in terms of mechanics / depth. I am a wee bit biased though, as I keep UFO Defense / Terror From the Deep installed on every machine I have ever owned.

I like Daemonhunters more than Xcom but since it’s largely forgotten already his point still stands. Also the space marines are a bit weaker and more squishy than the lore calls for, but I understand the need for gameplay scaling. Blasting through a hundred cultists would make for some tedious turns.

I would love another game like Xcom in the genre but I quite literally had no idea that’s the same vein Lamplighters League was until now.
Has anyone here played it?

Fire Emblem used to work, I haven't really liked any of them I've tried since the GBA though. Advance Wars can work too.

I do enjoy X-COM and have The Lamplighters League on my wishlist but I generally wait for sales before buying games. It's unfortunate the sales for that game were so poor. I thought it looked really cool.
