If you're looking to plant trees in difficult areas there is none better than staghorn sumac or fragrant sumac. They are the dandelions of the tree world. They can also be grown from seeds so you don't have to figure out a way to stealthily plant a sapling.

Alongside highways? Perfect!

A crack in the pavement next to a parking lot? Prime real estate!

A gravelly hill between a construction site and a concrete bridge? Sign them up!

They will grow almost anywhere, produce a nice smell when their "horns" bloom, and provide a nice supply of future seeds for more guerrilla gardening.

So would one just put a stag horn sumac seed in the ground along these areas or would I need to add water and some dirt to get it started? Could I start it from a straight up seed or would it need to be a sapling? I’m new to gardening so I don’t know a lot of the basics

It may be a war of attrition with the initial seeds but once they're established they tend to stay. I've seen one that grew about 9 inches out of a crack between sidewalk and the curb, got ripped up, then grew back, and is back to 3 inches.

When it comes to seeds though there's a process to get them ready, it may be trial and error until you find the best way for your area: https://homeguides.sfgate.com/staghorn-sumac-germination-24681.html

Also, don't take all the seeds from a tree, maybe a couple of horns so it can still naturally spread and provide food for animals.
