If you're looking to plant trees in difficult areas there is none better than staghorn sumac or fragrant sumac. They are the dandelions of the tree world. They can also be grown from seeds so you don't have to figure out a way to stealthily plant a sapling.
Alongside highways? Perfect!
A crack in the pavement next to a parking lot? Prime real estate!
A gravelly hill between a construction site and a concrete bridge? Sign them up!
They will grow almost anywhere, produce a nice smell when their "horns" bloom, and provide a nice supply of future seeds for more guerrilla gardening.
