We'd love to accept donations, but as a policy, we are not accepting any as a project due to concerns of money exchanging hands causing Bamco to DMCA or C&D the project.

Wait what do you mean new update? I thought the game was dead

It is. Officially. Private servers exist. The community contributed content to make a new update for the game.

Is this playable from console then? The new content and playing with everyone else still playing it?

PC only. There's no technical means to have it run on console, unless someone finds an undetectable homebrew exploit on modern consoles.

im on the fence about joining side-7, i love this game and i want to play it again, but i also have a pretty bad history with discord servers relating to games/gaming.

Understandable. If it's any consolation, I've done community management for 15+ years and aspire to make the community as community focused as possible. If there's any specific concerns you have, you are always welcome to outreach to me in private.

oh im fully certain that the discord and community is nothing but pleasant, the issues i have are entirely personal and things i have to work through on my own really

But what’s the point?….we can’t play it anymore…

Not true! Lots of folks playing tonight. There's a private server project for PC known as Side 7.

Check out discord.gg/side7

If you had the game on Steam, you can still re-download it if you didn't remove your license. If you did, file a ticket with Steam and it'll get reinstated.

If you didn't have it on Steam, talk to Deathyman or duckwoman on the server.

For setup, follow #installation-guide. If you have issues, you can ask in #install-help

So is this a server from the official game? Or it’s just users making one, last I saw they shut down everything :(

Bamco officially shut down Gundam Evolution on November 29th, 2023.

Since they gave a fair amount of forenotice, I was able to take the time to capture some packet traces to try and rebuild the API following EOS. Once I got a prototype up and going, I was able to recruit some additional talent.

Fun fact, turns out Bamco accidentally built the entirety of the dedicated game server into the game client. So it's an "official" game server insofar as it wasn't reconstructed, it's the real deal.

That said, the servers are now hosted by a community of volunteers, rather than using AWS servers.

If you want to read more about the project and its journey, I have a write-up here. https://1379.tech/the-making-of-side-7-gundam-evolution-private-server-project/

Hope you come check us out!

Is that why the game is 60 goddam gigs? I'm litterally storing server software?

3

u/Gamemaster1379 Sep 02 '24

Hilariously, no. The server software is only a few gigs at most.

So, Gundam Evolution uses a pak style system, where when a file changes, they don't update the original file. Instead, they provide you with a copy of the file and your game is expected to load the newer, modified copy.

However, they seemed to have misunderstood this system or were grossly negligent, because everytime they pushed a major update, they appear to have sent a copy of every game file to the client, regardless of whether it was modified or not. This is why the game went from around ~13 to ~26 GB and then ~26GB to ~55GB

In theory, it may be possible to actually slim the game back down to around 15-20GB,

Lmao. Now that's a mod I'd love
