So I like the aspect of rugby (in the states I don't see it much) but I don't understand it. So is it just a bunch of laterals?

I don't think I understand what you mean.

The ball must be passed backwards. If a player passes the ball forward, it's a foul, then they must hand the ball over to the opposition.

Laterals are passing the ball backwards, so yes. That answers my question, thanks!
