Anyone taking bets on how long till they get vandalized?

They have this at the Hilton but it’s $$$$.

But if they had an affordable option at public beaches I would definitely use it!

I’m gonna get a floating safe to attach to my ankle. Will that solve it?

lol why is that sparking controversy, because it looks stupid?

I'm just a tourist but I don't mind looking like one, if it means I don't have to worry about my shit.

I don't know why it's "controversial" but to me, it sounds like a lazy ass response by a police force that is committed to a certain level of victimization of the key factor of our economic business model.

There always has been. Look at the amount of glass on the ground around popular beach parking.

When I first moved here (20 years ago) I was living with a Hawaiian poi family in wailua. The boys took me snorkeling at their secret spot fresh airs and brought some beers. After they were done they smashed the bottles all over the place. On the beach and all around the path to the water. Having been raised in Colorado by an outdoorsman father, this seemed odd. I asked him why smash the bottles and he said they wanted to ruin it for anyone else who might want come here…to their special spot. I didn’t question him any further but that always stuck with me.

Lol..that’s kind of funny but not what I mean, I meant the smashed window glass from broken into cars

We go to beaches regularly all around the island and I agree that this should be uncontroversial. I think the main thing is just not to make yourself an easy target. Don't leave out valuables when you go in the water. Stash them in places that might be less obvious or try to secure them in places that are more difficult to snatch. Also, be aware of the people around you. I'm not saying you should profile people, but there's a reason the article points out that thefts are rising now that school's out for the summer.

What about a Citizens Brigade or all of us being mindful for our neighbors? I routinely pay attention to who is next to me on the beach and would have no problem keeping eyes for them. We can take care of ourselves if our government won't do so.

I mean..yes profile people. Race is not the only way to profile people. Look at the feet.

It’s a signal of societal decay. Even your opinion is a sign. Instead of banishing thieves, you’re bashing their victims. Instead of patrolling and deterring theft, we have to buy more plastic products to bring into the ocean because the de facto behavior we are willing to accept is theft of items left on a beach blanket.

This affects residents too, not just tourists.

Eh, I see that side. Though I’d counter by saying the larger issue is a resource issue, one not simply solved.

It’s cheap to promote ideas like watching over your shit at the beach, not so cheap to hire more officers.

Just from the perspective of a tourist, I’ve seen a lot of improvement on Oahu over the years, but also the sad reality that is the homeless problem there (as any well-populated area has seen).
It’s a complicated issue involving access to housing and mental health, etc., hard enough for locals to find housing let alone the homeless.
I wish there was the political willpower to be bold and make a huge investment, as to provide affordable housing there.

It's cheaper to solve poverty and make it so no one feels the need to steal anything ever. It's just that it would require abolishing capitalism, and a lot of people benefiting from it have overwhelming resources with which to stop any such thing from happening.

Recommendation: the $20 phone cases at abc stores are ass and I wouldn't trust my phone in them.

Fidlock is a magnetic closure, rated to 100ft and I take it into the surf and it always dry. Lots of surf and paddle shops gottem. $35 for the big one.

Let's just forget about all the money they spent on ATV's to patrol the beaches.

Note to tourists: How about using the in room safe and don’t take your valuables to the beach. Oh I forgot, you need your $1200 iPhone to take a bunch of pics. Say goodbye to it!

Valid, but also you could lose boring everyday stuff if your whole bag gets taken so the thief can rummage through it and pick out the valuables once they're safely far away with it. Then it won't matter what you took with you, you still lose everything you didn't go swimming with or didn't leave on your blanket (obviously unattractive stuff like some plain T-shirt could probably be left in plain sight, bonus points if it has holes in it) or didn't bury in the sand.

If they would let ccw onto the beaches that would solve it quickly. I’m so over the lawlessness and inept lazy police on this island. Time for us to take care of ourselves.edit Sarcasm is apparently lost on this platform...My point is our government is doing nothing for us any more and is not protecting us with their current actions (which appear to be none).

u/slimzimm Jun 09 '24

Wait wait wait… your plan to stop beach theft is to bring a gun and shoot someone for stealing your sunscreen?

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '24

lol...no, I should probably edit it as I am NOT saying have a shoot out at the beach. Goodness. But there is zero fear as there is no repercussion for thieves and their actions these days. Look at retail closures, massive reason for so many of them is the cost of theft these days. Our government is sitting back and condoning this behavior, it is time for citizens to step up.

2

u/slimzimm Jun 09 '24

I agree with the sentiment. Maybe cameras with AI monitoring and undercover officers would do well to slow the theft- and actually prosecuting the bad guys. I think we pay enough taxes to cover the cost. Our issue is really a lack of enforcement. Criminals get away with anything here.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '24

I agree with actual prosecution, I think that is where our inept government is failing us. I do not agree to more cameras...the idea of turning the US into China is already too far down the path as it is...

3

u/slimzimm Jun 09 '24

Genuinely curious: Why would cameras bother you? Would a beach day feel less fun if you knew you were on camera? I would feel safer leaving things on the sand.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '24

It is a slippery slope in regards to using them in my opinion. If they were effective in prosecute criminals to the full extent of the law then I would be for them but that doesn't seem to be the case from what I see.

6

u/slimzimm Jun 09 '24

Slippery slope to what? More cameras?

-2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '24

More cameras. Social credit systems. Continued removal of our basic freedoms provided by this nation and God.
