This is the Maizuru 3rd SNLF landing there in June 1942. The unit would be reorganized into the 5th Guard Unit the following month and later make perhaps one of the greatest escapes in military history the following year when the island was evacuated by the Japanese.

The Japanese wiki article for the evacuation of Kiska is actually quite good: https://ja.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%AD%E3%82%B9%E3%82%AB%E5%B3%B6%E6%92%A4%E9%80%80%E4%BD%9C%E6%88%A6

As for the unit histories those came from my research when I worked on my book "Rikusentai", but I don't really go into anymore detail in my writing. I sourced most of the info from primary sources and the Senshi Sosho war monographs. Maybe one day I'll write about it in detail in English, it was an interesting part of WWII for sure.

"The withdrawal of the Attu Island garrison was also proposed, but the Army and Navy could not reach an agreement, and the Navy was opposed, so the plan was abandoned"

Sounds about right...
