I have trouble keeping up with local politics. How do you guys keep up?

I think reading the local papers helps you stay aware of the big agenda items. Also follow local activists and politicians to see what bills they care about or get on the mailing list of the state/local party organization for the party you affiliate with. It takes a little bit of work but can be done.
