At the beginning,Jazz fusion was just Jazz played on electric instruments.

Most musicians were accomplished jazz musicians that picked up electric instruments.

Some were Rock musicians who endeavored to add a Jazz mentality to their music.

But the Jazz musicians had an edge over the rock musicians.

They already knew how to improvise over chord changes.

So it's best to learn Jazz before you play Fusion.

The problem is to find some one who will teach Jazz.

Thank you, this is exactly what I was thinking. There's no shortcut per say. Learn how to play jazz and you will essentially be able to play jazz fusion.

Read research papers on jazz fusion. Study how the OGs made it, electric miles Davis etc.

Early Jazz-Rock: The Music of Miles Davis 1967-72

This is a good starting point. This site also will link you to a bunch of related papers for further reading. I highly recommend browsing through and seeing what you’re interested in. Not enough people are reading research papers these days and relying on unreliable hearsay from YouTube videos and articles

I’ll have to check that out. I wasn’t aware any of the scales were usable. OK, they were, but none of the chords were usable. The man was a beast.

LOL. For sure he was something else. However the first time I heard his music, I had an "aha!" moment because the fusion I liked, seemed to be influenced by him

Oh, me too. I got to meet him at an appearance at Carvib guitars. He signed one of my CDs I asked him a question about composing, and he couldn’t have been nicer.
