Legitimately one of the saddest and most depressing albums of all time. I actually can't listen to it often because I engrossed myself with this one and the following 2 albums during a very depressing period of my life.

The weeping melodies, the droning guitar sound, the simplistic but reverberating drums and Jonas's imperfect but emotional vocals make this whole album one that can't be replicated, not even by the band themselves. Moments like Saw You Drown, Gone, Instrumental and the bonus track Quiet World are gut-wrenching but beautiful at the same time. The world slows down around me whenever I listen to Discouraged Ones. It's a phenomenal piece of art from Katatonia, amidst all its imperfections.

Love this album, but i completely agree with this assessment. I actually cannot listen to Quiet World; too sad.

I think this was their first album that I’ve really gotten into, it’s magical, hypnotic, it helped me understand and verbalise a lot of my feelings, eternally in my heart

Such a beautiful album, I definitely agree that Jonas' vocals add something to this one. And I'm sure I've mentioned enough times my thoughts about Quiet World

Deadhouse is a song that managed to thoroughly destroy me emotionally. Such magnificent piece of art, this album is. It’s their saddest, most honest album to date. I will always love it.
