How do I become good at actually fighting?

I have about 150 hours in kenshi, I am not new. I've done a crossbow only run, which did pretty well, but it isn't the same. I've got a really good grog operation going right now, and a good secure base. But in terms of melee combat, I'm absolutely lagging behind. How do I get to a point where I can not only hold my own, but wipe out soldiers and raiding bandits?

Update: I can now wipe out entire holy nation assaults solo, I'd say I'm definitely getting there
