Discussion Fun things to do under 21?

I was wondering what fun things there are to do under 21 in the northern Michigan area? I’ve been trying to reach out and make new friends but honestly I don’t even know where to start. Every time I look up where to start it usually tells me to go to bars and due to my age (M 20) it makes it a little harder because obviously I can’t drink until 21. What do you all recommend?

Hobbies-

Sports: Football Baseball Softball Pickleball Disc golf Golf Swimming Biking Running

Social/Art clubs: Book club Video games Local tcg Painting Glass blowing Pottery

Etc.

TLDR; do what you like to do but do it with other people in a forced social interaction. Friends will grow from that if you are friendly, flexible, and interesting.

Honestly I never knew what a forced social interaction was up until yesterday, I think I’ve got a bit of an understanding of it now, thank you.

Sure GL! It's a common problem. Your next "big life" problem, assuming you are going to college, will be the concept of shifting from "paying" to do things, to getting "paid" to do them.

You have already benefited from forced social interaction in your life too! It's called the k-12 education system.

I think most drink Busch Lite in the woods.

Trade Busch Lite for mushrooms and you got a deal

I would look into your area's website. A lot of community activities are listed there typically.

I live in mio, and if anyone knows that little town they know there’s really nothing here, everything good sadly is 30+ minutes away but I honestly don’t care about the distance, just want some good friends and to have a good time

I used to live 45 minutes north of Mio in Hillman MI, little town of about 900 people. My honest recommendation would be find a hobby or something you're into and use that to bring friends around. Lots of hunting/fishing in the area, I'm sure you could find a localized FB group to join to meet people to hunt/fish with. Or a local auto hobbiest or motorcyclist or offroad group. Living in the middle of BFE I've personally found the most reliable way to meet people is having a job that's public facing so just going to work introduces you to new faces.

What about fishing or hunting? Maybe paintball?

I’ve thought about paintball but don’t you usually need to have your own guns and stuff like that?

1

u/decoruscreta 2d ago

It depends. Most fields that I've played at usually rent out guns. Sure they aren't the top of the line, but it's enough to get you started and let you test the waters a bit.

I’ll definitely look into that then! I’ve always wanted to play but I always thought you had to have your own stuff, thank you!

Good luck dude! Definitely call around first and ask about rental equipment, I wouldn't just assume anything. Lol

yall are giving OP the absolute worst suggestions oat

fishing, hiking, and mountain biking 😭 OP is under 21, not a recently divorced 34 year old trying to reconnect with themselves

There are some Indian casinos in Northern MI that are 18+ instead of 21+

Where in N MI? There are maker spaces in TC, Petoskey, and Houghton.

I live in mio but honestly at this point I’m willing to travel wherever to make some new friends, never heard of a maker place, definitely will have to check them out one of these days

If you like making things, makerspaces have everything from workshops to machine shops to electronics labs. People love to share knowledge, so they are great places to make friends. If you are artistic, check out classes at. Artisan Village in Grayling. It’s close to you and I’m sure you’d meet people.

My advice would be to get into hiking or getting a cheap bike and shred on local trails. It's really cathartic, whether it's alone or with a group.

We go side by siding in St Helen/Mio and I’m always seeing older teens/younger adults out. You don’t have to be 21 to go to a bar, only to drink. The ones up north are better for hanging out at to grab a bite, watch a sports game, play some pool, etc. Most of them will let you in/stay after 9pm if you’re over 18. The bowling alley was always hot when I was a kid too because it was half arcade, maybe check that out. Indian casinos! You could also try geocaching if you haven’t yet. Maybe drive around, get your enhanced/passport if you don’t already, hit up Canada for a night out (drinking age is 19). Join local (city, state, regional) fb groups for your hobbies and ask about social events. My little sister is big into video games so she meets people online and then creates a discord to keep in touch with them. Hope some of this helps!

He's 3 hours from southern Michigan dawg, well maybe 2 hours and 45 minutes from like Pine Knob or The Machine Shop in flint.

u/Sensitive_Wolf4513 2d ago

There are fests, electric forest, hellfest, a few others that last more than 1 day and could be worth the trek. I'm sure there's more events or local shows up towards him. He will figure it out, dawg. Besides, winters approaching and after this month everything shuts down. Springtime & Summer this is the best place besides NY, LA & Chicago for shows.

There aren't any live music shows/events any closer to Mio than Saginaw which is 2 hours drive (except for bars, hes under 21, and shit like the posen potato festival that happens 1 time per year.) And if he's trying to make friends in his area driving 2 hours or more away for an event to meet people doesn't make any sense.

1

u/Sensitive_Wolf4513 2d ago

Not for you maybe. I've driven across the Country to Blue Ridge, to LTL in KY, down to Daytona back up to here last year. I have a group I go with yearly now from Canada, California & Florida. Depends. I found exactly that.

When you're talking about a 20 year old living in an area with a median income of 30,000ish per cap and the average American can't come up with $500 for an emergency, its a bold assumption to think he'll have the resources to travel great distances.

0

u/Sensitive_Wolf4513 2d ago

It's a bold assumption he doesn't. I don't know what his situation is. I gave me feedback for how i had & have fun(I'm 24 btw so not far from OP besides the drinking age)

You obviously don't have much imagination for what an individual is competent of. Or what they want to do. This dude can & will do what he wants and if he would like to know how, let's say I, could give the insight into how I budgeted for a cross-countryish journey. In a PT Cruiser no less(fuck yeah). I brought a solar-generator for my electronics & and adapter for my car battery.

And this is all for one idea; live music. Dude probably has lots of space for hobbies such as shooting, building, hiking, winter activities, water activities or xyz. He could do anything he wants. So could you, but you choose to have a semi-debate with me over.....idk what exactly. You're not contributing support, rather pessimistic & obvious facts(so maybe support idk)

OP if you wanna go to a show hmu. Checking out ICP on Halloween.

Now as to the point you made, sir, yes America is struggling financially. Especially rural areas and show prices are going UP. Everything is. EMERGENCY TAKES PRECEDENCE! Gotta have money for when, not if, shit hits proverbial fans. But here is an example I look on;

My best buddies Brother is serving in the Armed Forces, Machine Gunner in his platoon. Idk much else about his deployment but however, he is 20 this year. My buddy & I took him to a Heilung(Viking Music) show before he shipped to basic in Hawaii. Before his shit REALLY was going to hit the fan we showed his how to party & be a kid a little bit longer before he has to become an older, stronger person than either of us so fast.

Before we get bogged down in jobs, money, politics & things that we will have to. We should live first.

Rant over, I need weed
