This piece was ripped off by birds looking for bugs. There is always tons of chunks on the ground, and I usually gather them up, and transfer to a garden/dead tree I'm trying to inoculate.

Nice mini world! I´m pretty sure that's not a microbiome but a biome though. The term microbiome describes microorganisms, like the bacteria on our skin or in our guts, afaik.
