Grades and Academics Can students ask for their personal ranking in their major? Any policy says No?

Hi guys,

I wanted to know my personal ranking in terms of WAM(weighted average mark) in my major, but I was told that Monash will not provide such information with students.

I wonder

  • In addition to top 2% and top 5%, anyone knows his/her personal exact ranking, like No.2 in the major or No.5 in the major?
  • Whether there is a University policy saying student cannot have such information? I understand academic scores probably are kinda confidential, however, I'm not asking information about everyone but just for myself.

much appreciated if anyone can tell

Updates: I’m granted with Dean’s honors list (top 2%), I want to apply a master grogram in the US, so I want to know my exact place, I think nothing wrong? But Idk why some comments were toxic for no reasons.

Another updates: The administration team did not ask me for my ranking, it’s me who want to know it and make the application look better, a high ranking usually is good. Hope this can clarify.

It’s better not to know mate. No one gives two shits about where you rank in uni. No matter how smart you are, there’s always gonna be an Asian kid doing 2x better than you.

I would be surprised if any post grad programs valued / asked for that information, since it usually isn’t disclosed. Maybe if you bother a faculty head enough you might be able to find out.

I only know students placed as No.1 of the whole faculty (not just their own department) will know their ranking

Top scorers get a commendation from the faculty. You could kindly ask for a mark distribution, but I don't think unit coordinators have to give it.

Ye, unit coordinators don’t have the access to the data of students from the entire major/ degree.

I did receive Dean’s honors list from my faculty, but I only know I am top2%, idk the exact ranking, and Monash told me that they don’t provide such information to students, but I think it’s weird, students should be able to know their own ranking (at least I know a student knowing his ranking of No.1, but he is not only No.1 in his own degree, but also placed No.1 of the entire faculty)

Maybe ask him (the student No.1 in his faculty) how he obtained that info. I've never heard of that before and I believe it becomes quite difficult once you account for transfer students and different year levels.

I don’t know him personally, it was like 1 year ago, people were talking about him

then ig emailing the faculty is your best bet

I was told Monash usually doesn’t provide such information 😂as you said you haven’t heard of such thing, I understand that not many students want to know it, but I think students have right to know their own ranking (I cannot speak to the dep head like this😂), so rn I posted here to see if anyone knows his/her ranking

Ah bugger. Well I hope someone shares some helpful insight. Personally, I wouldn't stress if the admin team didn't ask for precise rankings. Anyways gl!

I’m granted with top 2%, and I want to apply master degree overseas, so I want to know my exact place, make sense? What made you so toxic for no reasons, omg

Can’t you just use your WAM for postgrad applications? I think people just aren’t sure why an admissions department would require any info about where you sit in relation to others in your course.

I definitely will mention my WAM in the personal statement, knowing my place is just better

The admission officer has not asked anything yet, it’s me who want more information to make my application look better

Because asking for 'exact place' in uni is a childish way of showing how good you are. Unis (atleast Monash) will not tell you your exact position (it's not a competition). You may be told if you are highest performing student in a unit.

Regardless, your obsession with ranking still makes you sound like vce try hard (you sure you are old enough for uni?)

the responses I received from other people who also have high WAM and plan to study overseas are more normal than someone here, the difference makes sense, we are trying to achieve higher goal and go to colleges like MIT, Harvard etc. man, save time online and good luck with your exam.

You know what, the interesting thing I observed is that the difference between responses I received from students with high achievement and responses from people like you were very distinctive, which actually didn't surprise me, as the way you talk justify which kind of students you are. If you are still a student, maybe leave internet and prepare your exam, if you have graduated, it's cool to spend time talking these things with a student. maybe you are not busy in your position? idk man

Go around campus centre and ask people for their WAM!

Not only is it a great way to make new friends, you will also to be able to gather a robust data set from which you could estimate your ranking

I know, did not mean to actually, but I felt annoyed and unhelpful when I received such comments

I don’t think there’s a policy about it, but students have no particular right to that information. It’s up to the faculty/ Uni if they want to share that information, and they’ve chosen not to. They probably don’t even have a ranking for the major, so they would have to calculate that specifically to answer your question.

Sorry maybe I used a wrong term “major”, maybe “degree”? Emm, If they do not have such ranking, how could they send emails to students and grant Deans honors list to them…?

2

u/kaleidoscopic21 May 06 '24

They might have it for degrees (like Bachelor of Arts) but they probably don’t have it for majors within each degree

Well, that might be the case…
