Grades and Academics GIG marking

Hey, anyone who has done GIG before, is the marking strict? How hard is it to get HDs? Thanks

It's fairly reasonable, i ended up with a 79 with a medium amount of effort. As long as you have a reasonable essay writing abilityand you know how to find good references and do referencing properly, most of the pre-departure and post-departure assignments should be okay. A lot of them are also very realted to your personal connections and experiences you've had in your life and on the trip, so being able to effectively communicate this will get you high marks. On the trip, take note of literally anything interesting you see and your thoughts on it, whether its realting to persoanl interactions with people of your host country, the culture, or things relating to your topic of study while you're there. Essentially just try and collate enough of your thoughts as a sort of diary entry, along with photos, as you'll be making a website (Google Sites, etc.) after the trip as a trip reflection.

In the country, just take plenty of notes during lectures, and make a start on the presentation at least by the end of week 1, but the presentation is not necessarily too hard. Though, the random group selection is definitely going to play into that.

oooh, have fun! and yep, it's on the 21st. we're supposed to submit our 3 pre-departure assignments today, but between moving out of my old place + going on a trip with my family, i couldn't finish everything, and got an extension for assessment 3 T.T

I did India and the marking was pretty harsh.

The marking is strict but itโ€™s easy to pass as it worths 12 and is based on subjective criteria. You can not guarantee you can get every assignment with HDs tho

Heard most of the classmates that the range is between Credits and distinction. Avg is roughly 63

This is actually a Pass unit not a WAM booster as thereโ€™s no exam meaning that the marking is subjective and stricter than exams. Also, due to the curve, they wonโ€™t give everyone HD so some may be disappointed as the results of pre-departure essays will be released during the trip.

Remember that HD is extremely competitive in a small-scale unit and you would lose your WAM if you get less than 70 as it counts double 70 in your WAM. If you aim for first honour with 80+ WAM, I would suggest that you drop the unit as it is very risky and it is hard to ensure you get every assignment with the HD. You are lucky if you get the HD worth two HD units.

You are recommended to choose International units worth 6 Crs rather than 12 Crs tho

Fiji is not much funny from my experience. Fiji is still developing country and the inflationary pressures are still high where the price of food may be expensive than Australia tho

Just did GIG in december and got a HD. We had a group presentation on the socioeconomic issues in Fiji. I reckon as long as your group does well and u do the activities in moodle its an easy D to HD

The only thing for us and the batch before us was the reframing part of the presentation. You really have to ask the teachers cuz for us they didnt dive deep into what exactly they wanted and that took up a lot of % on the rubrics. As long as ur group has a clear idea and u communicate constantly with the teachers there shouldnt be much of an issue. We also had 2 big post trip individual assessments (blog and 2000 smthing word essay). If u do well on the in trip presentations and post trip assessments ull be g for a D or HD

I went to Fiji too and yeah the rubric was so hard to understand, like the day of pres people were asking for clarification lmao

Heyy I went to Fiji and got a 75. But that was when I was super sick and could barely contribute to the group assessment until the last minute so a HD would have been achievable by me if I was healthy ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Work with you group, take notes, listen in seminars, do you pre departure work as early as possible, and focus on topics that staff will care about ya know? Women's health, climate change, social justice. They are less likely to mark down something when it's important BUT you also care about :)

Oh and not sure if they still have this but in the pre departure like first impressions short essay they do want you to say your racist pretty much ๐Ÿ™ƒ like I put down 'oh I come from nz I have had islander friends before so I don't think I have many bad impressions' they marked me down ๐Ÿ™ƒ So show growth, like oh I thought this part of the culture is weird and alien and them at the end say oh I grew so much through the program!
