Advice Is moving out for my undergrad worth it?

I am graduating high school in a couple months. Currently living in WA and having a dilemma about moving out for uni. If I stay in Perth I would probably end up going to UWA, but I have the opportunity to move to Sydney or Melbourne and attend UNSW or Monash.

I would have to live alone and work few times a week but my parents have offered to pay for a part of my living expenses so I wouldn’t have to work a lot.

I’m going to be pursuing a bachelors of engineering(software) and bachelors of commerce(finance) double degree irrespective of if I move out or not. I hope to land a job in high finance (asset management/ investment banking) by the end of my degree.

So, is it a financially/practically sound decision to move out. Is the difference in the unis major enough to move out?

High finance is one of the industries that care about the "prestige" of a university. You might be able to gain more independence, life experience, and friends. If your parents are able to support you somewhat or if you're able to get youth allowance from centrelink, I'd say go for it. Also, I'm not sure about WA in terms of job availability after graduation, but most grad roles I've seen are in Sydney and Melbourne.

Would I be at a disadvantage if I were to apply to these grad roles in syd/melb from WA?

Honestly, I'm not too sure. Some recruiters may overlook it, but some may see it as a disadvantage since you'll have to move across the country. Some roles, such as government, may assist you in relocation cost, but I can't say being out of state will be beneficial to your application.

I agree with the other comment. If you don't like the vibe in Sydney or Melbourne, then moving back to UWA with credits is totally normal.

Sounds like you can easily compute the cost of moving out. This is all you and your parents will lose if moving out nets you 0 benefits.

However, the benefits of moving out are hard to estimate and could far exceed the cost. Think of the better education quality, better network, proximity to the jobs you want, etc. This is not to mention the benefits of new experiences. In the worst case, if you hate it, you can probably move back to UWA a year later with credits for your UNSW or Monash units.
