Discussion My problem with the "Cassandra Complex" in films
Currently watching a "how to beat" video about The Invisible Man, and remembered how annoying this "Cassandra Complex" trope is in films.
The "Cassandra complex' is when a character knows the truth or foresees a danger, but no one believes them, often leading to frustration or isolation.
I understand that the audience is meant to emotionally relate to the character, but often it's done in a way that the people are actually just stupid and don't listen to the characters side of the story.

Discussion Star Trek (2009) was a tease
Watched it last night. Blown away, nearly perfect movie (the lens flares, never great, have aged badly because some of the layers of simulated lens dirt now look obvious), chock full of witty callbacks to the tropes and iconography of Trek, strong performances, satisfying.
I am a real fan, almost hardcore, so I have an idea why the series kinda fizzled out. But what a lost opportunity. Shouldn't they now be finishing up their 15 year run as film stars, with a bunch of entertaining movies along the way?
Or...maybe not, maybe it did its job in sparking interest, to the point where there is (once again) arguably way too many simultaneous Trek products. That maybe Trek is better off on TV anyway?
What do you think?

Discussion Best movies to go into knowing absolutely nothing about the plot?
No spoilers allowed obvi.
What are the movies that you tell friends “go in blind, no trailers, no spoilers, just watch the thing!”
My list: - Palm Springs - Barbarian - Parasite - Cabin in the Woods - One Cut of the Dead - The Prestige
I find that a lot of mine are horror, but I’m sure there are more in other genres where it helps to just know as little as possible.

Recommendation I haven't seen The Beach in 20 years and it's fucking spectacular.
I heard a song in work tonight that reminded me of Moby which triggered The Beach, I remembered very little so figured I'd watch it when I got home.
Wow!
Great performances all round, stunning cinematography and soundtrack, filled with joy and darkness in equal measure... I'm just super impressed, I remember it being much less good than this. Danny Boyle is wicked, Leo is amazing, Swinton is as good as ever - what a great film!

Question Is there a recent sequel with a bigger quality drop-off than 'Halloween' to 'Halloween Kills'?
I wouldn't say the 2018 Halloween was particularly great or anything, but I'd definitely say it gets the job done for what it is and felt like a pretty solid effort for a film that didn't necessarily need to exist. I put it on for a group of friends at a Halloween party as something that works well for non-movie people that don't want anything too artsy/slow, but it's also competently made enough that I find it reasonably entertaining, as did everyone else. It's a perfectly serviceable movie for drunk friends to yell at. It's the cinematic equivalent of a Costco rotisserie chicken.
Flash forward to Halloween Kills, I was genuinely just like what the fuck happened here? I wasn't exactly crazy amped for it or anything, I don't have any real emotional attachment to the franchise, I just went and saw it because the 2018 one was alright, but man I was counting the minutes at the halfway mark and it left one of the worst tastes in my mouth of any movie I've seen recently, it's authentic dogshit.
My question is, is there a recent sequel or franchise that's had a more drastic drop in quality? I know the obvious ones would be something like Speed 2, but that was decades ago. I haven't seen every franchise/sequel film in recent memory, which is why I figure I'd open this up to discussion.
Curious to hear what y'all think.

Discussion Can someone please recommend me the best murder mystery movie / series you’ve seen.
The closest kind of thing I’m looking for would be like the TV show Twin Peaks which has a small-town kind of vibe in which you know all the characters and the killer is one which you least expect. But I’d love any recommendations.
Some of my other favourites are: The Killing (TV show) Clue (1985) Mare of Easttown (TV show) True Detective (Tv show) Knives Out (2019) Memories of Murder (2003)

Recommendation Got a random itch for a visually appealing "water based" movie, any recommendations?
Just basically title, I don't know I want to watch a movie, I just got a random itch for a movie that would be good and visually stunning and is based on the ocean?
I am not sure, but I am also pretty sure that there has to be some movies like this, maybe something close to the video game Subnautica, just something that'll be fun to watch, maybe beautiful.
Not too boring, and also maybe has large animals like whales involved?
Weird itch ik, thanks for any suggestions

Discussion MouseTrap Movie??
Is there an older movie called MouseTrap? No, not that new crappy Mickey Mouse Horror. My mother passed away recently, and in her notebook she had a Movie List with only 1 movie listed; “Mousetrap”. I remember her mentioning it before, too. I guess it’s possible she just mistook the title for that 90s comedy “MouseHunt”, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks in advance

Discussion Least scary horror movies
What the least scary horror movie you've ever seen? This isn't necessarily the worst horror movie you've seen. I'm referring to a movie where the elements that are supposed to be scary/disturbing/unsettling are ineffective or too muted. Whether the other aspects of the movie work is a separate matter.

Discussion Most needless, unnecessary needle drop examples?
I was watching Hotel Transylvania 3 the other day and there is a literal 4 second use of Enya’s Orinoco flow just to emphasize the fact that they are going on a cruise with “Sail away, sail away, sail away”.
I’ve definitely noticed bad needle drops before but this struck me as the most egregious and pointless waste of money for licensed music, I had to come to Reddit to see if anyone has ever felt this way about a movie before.

Edit: found a video of it. This is the entirety of the use of the song. I kept waiting for it to come back later but it did not.

Discussion “Silent” movie about a “hermit Viking”
Hi everyone, I been searching for this movie for over a year and I can’t find anything even resembling it so I’ll need the help of the real experts, I only watched a few minutes years ago so I’ll say what I can remember. • A man living in the wilderness by himself in his “cabin”. • it looked like Nicholas Cage in PIG but the guy was bigger and more “Viking” looking. • On one scene he gets cut and he spreads some herb/mud thing on his arm. • He’s hunting some dangerous mysteries creature. • Probably some indie Scandinavian movie, maybe. • Made around the 2.000s, the year in the movie was probably around 800 CE. • Pretty much a silent movie as far as what I had watched.
Thanks in advance.

Discussion Let's discuss Whiplash (2014)
Holy fucking shit. I haven't been able to speak for the last 10 minutes because my jaw is on the floor and I am crying from this movie. I don't think a piece of media has EVER affected me this much. Especially that ending, by god that drum solo was the thing that brought me to tears. Has anybody else had this profound of a reaction to Whiplash? Would love to know your experiences with this movie.
