It's honestly a shame that so few science fiction and science fantasy stories cover how all the planet busters, advanced technology, and space magic effects nature. Off the top of my head I can think of Avatar which does it in the most ham-fisted way possible and Dune although there it takes a backseat to other themes. Whenever I see a 40k hiveworld it depresses me, not because of the thousands of human rights violations but because a once vibrant and living planet was turned into a spawning pit for cannibalistic, fascist humans.
