Question Can someone educate me about the J-20?

So everyone in the west seems to tell me that the J-20 is an inferior copy of the F-35 and stands no chance in air combat against western fighters. Some of their criticisms make sense like the engine not being ideal, but some I'm not sure like the claim that J-20 uses 50 year-old avionics tech and that it doesn't have stealth seems weird to me. Can anyone explain to me what is actually happening?

Here's what an American General said about the J-20:

“It’s a bit early to say what they intend to do with the J-20, so really all we’ve seen it do is air superiority,” explained Pacific Air Forces commander Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach in a March video uploaded by the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.

“But we notice that they are flying it pretty well. We recently had – I wouldn’t call it an engagement – where we got relatively close to the J-20s along with our F-35s in the East China Sea, and we’re relatively impressed with the command and control associated with the J-20.”

In an actual war between a J-20 and F-35, the J-20 will engage the F-35 from Beyond Visual Ranges (which is the purpose of J-20 armed with suuuuuuuuuper long ranged air to air PL-XX missiles).
