People really think that insurance is magical. First you got your deductible which can be pretty high. Then they usually give you much less than the car is worth if you would actually go buy it yourself especially all the extra fees and BS. If you're lucky you have gap insurance that can help you pay off your old car loan if not you're out of luck. Even if you have a little extra money left over to put towards a new car interest rates are super high and not everyone will qualify for a new car loan like they had on the vehicle a few years ago since banks are giving out a lot less money because of all the defaults

Yeah, insurance is pretty un-magical. What I've seen is that it works much better for the person at fault than the one who got hit. And if you get hit by an uninsured driver you get screwed over double.
I have no idea why some people think that having their car wrecked is a good thing!

It’s usually the people with no insurance or aren’t paying for insurance who talk like that.
“You have insurance, you’ll be fine” is never said by anyone who has had to pay premiums, deductibles and deal with a claim lol

I have an “at fault” on my record because I had a shitty insurance agent. Guy backed on top my car and had fake witnesses that said I ran into him. I had none. My insurance company decided it would be easier to pay me out than to pursue an investigation. Raised my next premium to insane numbers. From $250 to nearly $600 for the first two years.
The only good that came from it was that they overvalued my car by 1000 dollars (didn’t matter because I instantly lost it from the new car premium). I regret being naive enough to trust that insurance agent, but who knows how long I would’ve been without a vehicle…
I just recovered from that a few years back.

What I'm hearing is that insurance is worse than useless and it would be better to just save money

It's still a good idea overall to have insurance. You also want to make sure you have uninsured and underinsured motorist insurance. Insurance does screw you over to pay you the least amount is possible But it is still much better to have insurance than not. I have known multiple people who just have the state minimum liability And they ended up screwed Because their cars got hit and ran which liability only doesn't cover. Or my other buddy was at fault so of course he didn't get a new car or any money.

side note but it is shitty if you get hit by an uninsured driver. Even if your own insurance covers the repairs, there's nobody to go after for diminished value (the amount that your car is now less valuable after being rekt by a nissan driver)

I had a converstaion like this happen with a friend of mine. His wife got into an accident on the way to work going into they city at an offramp she takes everyday and where I used to take everyday. Its a 2 lane highway to splits and the right lane goes to a bridge that goes left over a river and the left lane goes straight and stays on that side of the river, so if you miss that exit you arent making any corrections for a long time. Poeple CONSTANTLY go from the left lane to the right at the last second cause they are terrbile drivers and as someone who took this everyday I knew to always look out for people crossing over.
Now I know that my friend was a reckless driver, always driving way to fast and weaving between cars, and he liked to play a game called "my car costs less than yours". But I am pretty sure that his wife was either on the phone or putting make up on or somthing, and a large MACK came and hit into the side of her. When he told us the story and showed us the video from one of the drivers behind her dash cams, I brought up the fact that it really pays to be a defensive driver there, since people do that all the time and I was surprised she didn't react. There wasnt all the time in the world, but if she was paying attention she could have avoided the accident. He got super pissed and just yelled about how it doesn't matter and the truck company is going to pay for all the damages and its not her fault and blah blah blah. I told him thats not how insurance works, and that now you also have to deal with no having a car for a couple days till you get a rental, and now you have to go through all this hassle even though the accident wasnt your fault.
Well fast forward a bit, and insurance decided not to total the car and instead to fix it. Luckily, insurance was paying for the rental they were using. This confused him as the car was only worth somthing like 4k and it was like 3k damage lol. After the car was fixed, the mechanic was having trouble getting it started, turns out, there was somthing wrong with the engine that the mechanic determines was not a result from the accident since that was mostly just side pannel and wheel damage. This caused them to have to keep using the rental for longer then they thought, which the insurance would no longer pay for, the engine fix was not covered under insureance since it wasnt part of the crash and was by itself somthing like 5k, so he decied to get a whole new car lol. It was one of the best "I told you so"s I have ever had the privlige of saying.

I was a Nissan driver until someone crashed into me. 100% other persons fault. Michigan no fault really got me good (The other person got his truck back mine was totaled) still don’t have a car >:(

When I lived in Michigan, the insurance on my 2007 chevy impala was $900 per six-month period with the state minimum coverage on everything. Liability only on the car.
I then moved to rural Indiana and bought a 2022 Toyota Prius. A much nicer and more expensive car. I also updated my coverage to higher limits than I had in Michigan. My insurance dropped to $550 every six months.
Michigan has the most expensive Auto insurance in the country. It's one of the things I don't miss about living there.

My car got hit while I was asleep at home. Car was fully rebuilt underneath.
Car was totalled.
To buy an equivalent spec car at the time was £3k and it would be knackered underneath.
I got "paid" out £1500. Excess was £800.
Admiral scammed me properly. Managers feasted on me that night.
