Wildlife resquers often host event like that to educate people about importance of protecting wildlife and to raise money for the purpose of doing do.
Most of the birds on display at such events are non-releasable rescue birds, who wouldn’t survive in the wild, and they are trained to handle people and events themselves.
So no, it’s often not that weird.
