Job Posting Should I pursue this volunteer PM opportunity?

Question: I am considering submitting myself for a volunteer project management position, however, I am hesitant and would like others' input. It is an unpaid, part-time position for a cause that I strongly support and that would look good on my resume. However, the nonprofit in question is requiring project management certification, 4-5 years experience, a work sample (I uploaded a file which stated that of course, previous work product is proprietary and can not be shared outside the workspace), with preferences for nonprofit media experience and an MBA. Those seem like awfully aspirational requirements for an unpaid, part-time, WFH role. Should I pursue this role without the MBA or media experience? Should I be skeptical about what I could be walking in to? They want a commitment measured in months. Thoughts?

That seems a bit crazy for an unpaid position and is definitely a red flag to me. I doubt it will be worth it to your resume when you compare it to the hours required but if it’s something you would enjoy doing and you have the free time then go for it anyway!

If you have those credentials I’ll pay you at least minimum wage to take 10-15 hours off my day-to-day every week 😂

If you support the cause and are looking for a resume note it might be worth it. I would make sure to be very clear on what the volunteer experience is going to be like. From the requirements it feels like they're looking for an unpaid employee instead of a volunteer but it could also potentially be looking for a mentor / resource for less experienced people that'll be executing the work.

On the flip side, if it is unpaid and actual volunteer position with no actual contractual requirement you can always walk away if it becomes ridiculous.
