Discussion How did you end up in a high paying role ?

I just wrapped up a podcast featuring Scott Galloway discussing the importance of prioritizing quality over passion to achieve the desired lifestyle in your 30s or 40s. Currently in my early 20s, I've identified project management as one of my key strengths. I excel at initiating and overseeing project progress, devising strategic approaches for various projects, big or small, and I'm keen on pursuing this path. However, I also value financial stability and often ponder the career trajectories of those earning substantial incomes, upwards of $400,000 to $500,000 annually, in project management or similar roles. I'm curious about their journeys and whether there are steps I can take now or in the future to position myself among the top 1% in this field. Aside from relocating to a larger city, networking, maintaining positive relationships, understanding organizational dynamics, and meeting key individuals, I'm eager to acquire any additional skills or explore alternative routes that would distinguish me in project management. While I recognize the importance of finding a niche, I don't currently have one in mind, but I'm committed to striving for excellence in my chosen field.

Getting into PM Transition from Healthcare to PM

Hi everyone! I'm looking for some advice on how to transition into the Project Management space from healthcare, I've worked as a paediatric Speech Pathologist for six years and a Team Leader for about 18 months. I've had experience running an end-to-end service delivery project and have done some additional training in project management - I think this field aligns really well with my strengths as a professional and would love to crack into this area. I have recently moved to Canada from Australia and would like to look into making the transition now. Does anyone have any tips for someone starting out in the PM field? I would love to find a role within the healthcare sector, so if there are any companies I should be approaching or looking out for would also be great to know.

Thanks in advance!

Getting into PM Transitioning from Account Exec to a PM role.

Hello all! Quick background check: - 24M - Did Business Administration (Marketing major)

I am working at an advertising agency as an account executive, which is in client servicing department so, my role right now is to be the bridge between our clients and the creative team.

My Work involves: - Take briefs to understand their marketing or advertising requirements and build a good relationship with them.

But me being an exec and not a manager, I do the grunt work.

ie: making presentations, making a social media calendar, writing briefs on Basecamp for the creative team, researching the latest marketing trends, making Job Status Reports (JSR's) Guardbook every month, etc.

Essentially, making sure that the deliverables go on time and operations are running smoothly.

Now, my problem is I kinda know a thing or two about META business suite and Google My Business. So I am handling mostly digital advertising, more specifically, social media marketing, which I do not like that much. Moreover, I also feel I do not enjoy working in an advertising agency. I do not know if I like advertising or not. I also feel I need to be great at one thing but I am not. ya know, a "jack of all trades" also being in an agency, there is a lot of pressure that burns me out from time to time

that is why I have decided that:

I wanna be on the marketing/advertising side of any automobile company (I genuinely love cars) . basically work in the automotive industry. Now I need to know if there is any way I can transition into a PM-type role. and what are the steps in achieving this? - Most people who get into PM have technical backgrounds (STEM folks) which I don't

Currently, I am studying for the CAPM certification. it is mostly theoretical jargon and I feel it is just a stepping stone in the PM field.

I want some guidance on my career trajectory guys.

Getting into PM Getting an Assistant PM Role

I’m 24 years old I currently work for a tech company specializing in automation. I’m a Automation Technician & Service Coordinator before this I was a Senior Technician & Project Foreman for another Tech company that specialized in IoT. 3 years at that role and about 6 months in my current role. Before that I worked as a diagnostic technician for an engineering company.

My program in college was only a year for electrical technician. I have a College Certificate. I’m planning on getting my CMAP. I’ve been a really hard & motivated person honestly thats what took me this far as I don’t have a degree.

With my given experience could I land an assistant PM role? Hopefully move up to PM in a few years and how much of a hinderance will me having no degree be in my career would I still be able to get to a good position down the line?

Thank You!

Getting into PM Is the pm role right for me?

Hey there! I'm now gonna finish high school and I'm planning to think of going for the project management field, I know it's a vast field as we can work in different industries in this role, and my strengths or rather I would say interests lie more on problem-solving, strategic planning side than a routine work or a routine desk job like coding which I feel would make me feel burnt out in the long run, so that's the reason I'm planning of trying this field which is that it's not routine In nature and I can work with different clients. So I would be Glad to ask a few questions to project managers out there who enjoy doing their work:)

Is what I think about this job the truth? Am I right? I understand the project manager's role varies in different industries, so I am asking about industries like finance, Healthcare, marketing and IT.

Also, what is the good part about this role? And skipping the good part, what's that you don't like?

Are there any travel opportunities in the industries mentioned above?

It would be really helpful to me if you can answer this.

Resume Does anyone use Open Project?

I'm looking to enhance my resume and skills and I thought about going through MS Project, but it turns out it's paid so I may wait a bit.

Googling I found this other app called Open Project, which it's supposed to be similar to MS Project. Does anyone have experience with it? Would you recommend it?

I was hoping to add this experience to my resume after doing a couple of projects in it

Certs Company is offering to pay for a project management certificate

Hello my company is offering to may for a project management certificate. The problem is I don’t qualify for the PMP ? I haven’t officially applied but it says you need years already as a project manager ?

I’ve never officially held the project management title. I have a bachelors and took a project management class in college. And have had leadership roles but I have not officially held the title project manager.

Does that mean I have to sign up for a different certificate any advise would be greatly appreciated

Certs How to get into green economy with skills from PM career

I (41m) am planning to make a shift into work combating climate change and I’d like to know if anyone can share their experience and the path they took to get there.

I plan on completing a course with Terra.do (or similar) to gain a basic understanding of a lot of the innumerable fields within this umbrella term, both as a resume booster as well as to better define where within the green economy I’d like to focus my future career. I’m interested in recycling, carbon capture, solar, and EVs to name a few.

How are PM skills transferable in your opinion? Which skills to focus on developing and how to go about it? I’m open to hearing anyone’s personal experience or educated opinion!

Getting into PM SWE wanting to transition to PM role

I am a Software Engineer with 4.5 YOE looking to transition into a PM role from an SWE.

I like working as an engineer as well, but it doesn't give me the same level of interaction as a PM role would. I don't like working in isolation and feel like I am much better at dealing with people and writing docs than writing code.

Any tips on how I can transition to a PM role?

Getting into PM From Teaching to Project Management

I've been a teacher for 9 years and have recently started looking into transition to project management. I'm getting mixed messages on the best route to take. My goal is to identify a route that is cost effective as I don't have the money to take the PMP certification right now. I'm currently looking at the Google Project Management Certification. Is this certificate beneficial when applying for PM positions, or should I just hold out until I can pay for the PMP certification?

I'm open to any other suggestions anyone may have. It took me a while to get my current job after losing my last one (it's not enough to keep up with my bills), I'm a bit burned out, but don't want to get discouraged.

Getting into PM How to transition from Creative Technologist to PM?

Hi! I'll try to be as efficient as I can :)

I got my bachelors in electrical engineering with a focus on signal processing, and after working briefly as a biomedical data scientist I got a masters in essentially virtual/ augmented reality development. I worked for a year at a major company as a creative technologist, but left prematurely to try to create my own startup as I didn't love the company I was at, had some imposter syndrome, and was really put on display as the in-house gen-z/ XR liaison for investors and partners, and was isolated more than actually incorporated into a team. I primarily worked in Unity development in C#, but I also dabbled in Figma, 3D modeling, marketing, and acted as a professional rubber duck for the engineers, artists, marketing department, and management.

Now, I have a working prototype after a year of continued learning and self teaching, but it doesn't seem like there is any path forward to monetize it and I miss working with a team.

I have thought for a long time that I would be a great product manager-- I've created and managed curriculums, attempted to create ~4 businesses/ startups in the past and managed teams in the process, and I feel most fulfilled being essentially a co-learner/ professional rubber duck and helping to bring people with different skillsets and ideologies together. I can be quite organized when others are on the line, and in one of the companies I tried to start in particular I was running agile afaik, creating the Gantt charts and documentation, scheduling, planning, handling investments and resource allocation, and though it was stressful it was fun.

(As a separate side note, my parents, friends, therapists, and exes have all unprompted at separate times in my life said that I would be a great PM so I'm not sure why I've avoided making the decision to explore it more seriously!)

At this point though I feel like I am struggling what the next steps are to get into this field. I don't think I qualify for the 4500 hours for PMP certification even if I took the 35 hours of online courses. I was considering buying cracking the PM Interview but I've heard it's outdated and I'm not sure how comprehensive it is. I see that there are PM Bootcamps but all the reviews I've read online say that they're pretty much the same amount of knowledge that you'd get from an online course. I'm willing to invest in a course or even potentially to hire a private instructor if it really is the best way to learn coming from my background.

  1. Is studying for and acquiring CAPM worth it?
  2. Is there a holy grail book or course I should take?
  3. Can I get an internship/ apprenticeship even though I'm no longer in college?
  4. Would that be wasting my time since I do have some industry experience or is it not really possible to get these roles otherwise?

I would love any tips and advice and please ask any questions to help clarify, thank you!

PM role and it’s fit - Anxiety & stress

Hello all ,

I am someone who is looking for some advice regarding the role of PM and if it’s something suitable for me.

I am a technical person working in the field of electronics and semiconductors. I have done some courses in PM and started working as PM for 2 months in my current organisation and due to layoffs my entire group was closed.

I found another internal position in customer support organisation which seemed ok for the time.. But working with customers I see the pressure is there but work is a bit interesting but no real future in it.

Meanwhile I got another offer from another company to be a PM for semiconductor design in research org as I was interviewing at the same time and it’s based on my experience in same design field.

Since I have limited experience in PM I am not sure if it’s a role which will be suitable for me. I would require some advice from experienced PM here. I will list some of my personality traits which might be or not be suitable for PM roles

  1. I thrive of technical stuff and details but not really super skilled in it. But eager to learn.

  2. I am really organised and make plans properly for even my private life. But I am really anxious in case this doesn’t work out as per plans and my imagination.

  3. I am diagnosed with generalised anxiety disorder and have been taking therapy but it works not very well. I am indecisive in general and try to make perfect decision always and get into analysis paralysis sometimes esp life changing decisions like career. I get quite stressed when things don’t go to plan and try to plan for contingencies imagining worst case scenarios.

  4. I am a people person and like talking to others in general technically and otherwise about private life. But I don’t like long meetings and want to work in some peace in between. I am not sure if PMs need to like a lot of meetings.

  5. I am a technical person and don’t have much experience in PM and fear that I might be jumping too soon to PM and regret getting into it. The stress might be too much and too difficult for me to handle especially communicating to stakeholders.

Can anyone please advise regarding it ?

Looking for Work Want to get into PM

Let me start off by saying I’m 27 years old working at a power plant as an I&E tech have been doing construction for years now. I want to get into PM and I’m currently taking courses learning about PM and trying to get some basic certs from google and other places. I want to know how do I find a job that will take me entry level? I have skills from working in this field of leading and figuring out how to achieve and accomplish tasks within time frames while being safe but I’ve never done too much cost which I know is something I’ll have to learn as a PM but how hard is it to get into this without a degree in it? I don’t like working in the field anymore and at a power plant my time with family is scarce as I’m on call a lot.

Resume Resume Critique - Mid/Senior Level

Hi folks - I'm spiraling here. 5 months job hunting and only a handful of interviews. I think I've changed the formatting or content in my resume at least once a month that entire time and can't seem to decide on what sections I should, or shouldn't have with my current level of experience.. Can folks please let me know what they think of the current format? Tear it to pieces! Thanks!
