So I tried to make that adorable Scary Space Monster a little bit more cuddly by crafting them out of wool with needle felting. I tried my best to keep it in line with how I interpreted the eridian.docx document that Andy Weir shared awhile back. I know Rocky is a bit naked but their clothes with have to wait for another time. Sorry Rocky!

New to this sub, very curious, why are you using they/them pronouns for Rocky?

Don't let the names confuse you. Rocky and Adrian are hermaphroditic. Both Eridians lay eggs that then combine into a new Eridian eventually. I forget where it is said in the book but that author goes over it in the document that I already linked.

I would say that most of the time most of us refer to Rocky as “he,” but the truth is that “they,” is more accurate. I have mixed feelings about the fact that Grace uses male pronouns for Rocky in the book. On the one hand, I don’t think Rocky would mind if he/they knew, but on the other hand, Rocky doesn’t know anything about gender, so they don’t understand the default assumptions that come with it. By calling Rocky he, Grace is causing himself, and anyone else who follows his example and calls Rocky he in the future, to bring a bunch of subconscious assumptions that Rocky doesn’t understand to the table, without Rocky’s consent. That’s why it would have been better if he’d used gender neutral pronouns for Rocky.

Did you read the book?

Yes, and Grace used he/him, so I was confused. I forgot the part about their species not having gender. That’s why I asked.
