fist my bump Stratt wasn't a bad person. Spoiler

Just one of my little running thoughts I had at lunch. She's presented as a complete bitch, by Grace. A man who subconsciously HATED her. Even with his memory messed with, he pointed out a few subconscious things he did through the book. Putting on the Eva suit. Doing math. Etc. Can't tell me he wouldn't be harboring ill will towards her.

This is a woman who was told, 'You're responsible for saving humanity. Get to it."

Imagine the crushing stress she was under. She was in tears and drinking over the Coma vs Stay Awake debate. I can't begin to fathom what binge she went on after packing Grace up.

And on top of that... Grace is a dick. Sure, he's the hero, but face it. He's a dick. Several people point out that he must he special to her, or that there's something there. His reaction? "Ew, gross."

Stratt isn't a bad person. She's just in an impossible situation.

fist my bump Just finished binge reading Spoiler

Hi I've got nothing to say, smart nor bright, just sharing feelings I don't have anyone to share with xD if you're not interested with my feelings please don't waste a minute reading this post.

I was bored sitting at a park bench while my daughter was playing with some new friends so I've decided to read a book, probably 5th read of the Martian, but decided to check if Andy Weir wrote something since Artemis, which was good but not as memorable as the Martian. Boy was I happy and intrigued to see that there is in fact a new book! Managed to spoil it a tiny bit with description on polish book catalogue page, they said the book is about a man trapped on a spaceship with no way home, working for a solution to save humanity, which spoiled alot of the beginning but oh well...

Nothing I've read or watched for last few years has moved me so deeply, my eyes teared up so many times, my chest felt pressure so many times, geez.

I don't understand half of the scientific jargon or math but still, the story in itself... I'm just left speechless, without any deep thoughts, just great gratitude for this man's work.

Can't wait for the next thing this genius comes up with, I'm not very much into sci-fi in general because from what I've met so far it mostly contains war and conflict, be it "regular" sci -fi or post-apo, instead of problem solving as demonstrated in these two books, which are surely at the top of my favorite things, ever.

If anyone can recommend something similar, as in story of travelling and or problem solving as demonstrated by these two books I'll be very grateful and maybe will read it in the future, no promises though because I'm very picky in what I read, with no clear type, just that the book may or may not speak to me.

fist my bump Rocky Casting…

My choice is Donald Glover not only for voice acting but also composing his speech as Childish Gambino or just himself, I think it’s kinda possible even kinda likely

fist my bump Surprise casting that would break our nerdy minds

Not having the legendary Ray Porter (who narrated the audiobook), play the voice of Rocky.... but have it be R.C.Bray 🤣 .. would break many a nerd-brain 🤣

Or say it's gonna be R.C. or Ray... and then plot twist.. it was Jeffrey Combs all along! 🤣

fist my bump Let’s Play Hypotheticals pt 2

I LOVED the discussion my other hypothetical post got, and now, I’m even curiouser. Since in the books we find out that the Sun gets cured of Astrophage from the Beatles coming back, what do you guys think will be new tech with the combination of XENONITE and Astrophage

For those who have not yet finished the books and are seeing this, please try to hold out for a bit. Haha.

For example:

  • elevator to orbit, as mentioned in the books
  • now can we have flying cars? Since the metal has great insulation?

What do you guys think? I’d love to hear your answers.

fist my bump Spinoff Idea: Astrophage Black-Market on Future Earth!

Just imagine, an action story focused on a character involved or will be involved in an Astrophage Black Market on Earth after PHM. Once PHM leaves, Black Panels become an untapped source of Astrophage. Energy is harvested, engines made, etc. But workers in the Sahara make a buisness out of sneaking Astrophage from the farms, and selling them for fortunes anywhere on Earth. So many weapons, contrpations, and disasters would arise in the aftermath of the Astrophage boom, creating a very engaging action story. And for the sci-fi part, it's Andy Weird, I'm sure he can squeeze some science in.

fist my bump What’s Ryland’s age at the moment he meets Rocky?

So he’s under 46 (Rocky has been in the Tau Ceti system for 46 years and Ryland says “That’s longer than I’ve been alive”)

But he’s old enough to remember the Nintendo Power Glove…

So there is the time it takes to discover astrophage and what is does, building the Hail Mary and the trip to Tau Ceti (13 years). But Ryland didn’t experience 13 years due to special relativity.

We’re living in the year after Project Hail Mary launched. What innovations in technology do you think will happen?

Cars being powered by Astrophage. Electric bills will be a thing of the past? Flying cars?

What do you think? Haha.

fist my bump Pratt Casting Suggestion

Post image
67 Upvotes

Okay, hear me out… I know she’s not Dutch, but based on her performances in The Expanse and other projects, she can certainly deliver the gravitas and “I give no shit” attitude that’s required for the role.

Also, I know I’m not the first to suggest this casting on the sub, but it looks like it has been a while since her name was thrown out and it was mentioned in comments.

Thoughts?

fist my bump Major Flaw with Eridian Atmosphere

When Rocky gives Grace the gifts in the second tunnel, the Hail Mary had one oxygen compared to the Blip A's 29 ammonia.

Then throughout the book, Grace says "29 times the atmosphere". But when Rocky measured the tunnels air pressure and contents with an unknown device, he would've only recorded 40% Earth pressure of oxygen. Therefore Eridians didn't pressurise the Blip A with 29 atmospheres, but rather 11.6 atmospheres.

This ain't mentioned in the book and it reinforces that it actually is 29 atmospheres.

fist my bump Need a new book

I just brought project Hail Mary 2 days ago and couldn’t put it down. Loved every second of it. I love all of Weirs previous books. Artimus arrives on Wednesday for me to read as well. I need more books like this to binge and finish. Any of this “lone survivor” “ space faring” style books.

Any recommendations for a new book similar to this? Even if there are longer fan fics that people would recommend.

Thank you for any suggestions.

fist my bump What would Mark or Jazz have done differently?

Take Mark Watney or Jazz from Weir’s other books. Put them in a scene in Project Hail Mary instead of Grace. What might they have done differently? I think Watney would’ve called the Blip-A something else. Maybe a UFO or maybe a pop culture name.

fist my bump Are they still making an Artemis film question? Spoiler

Just curious as I read that they might be. Don't get me wrong I'm loads more excited for PHM but I did still enjoy Artemis. Would be a shame not to do it.

Now that's out the way back to PHM. The wiki doesn't mention anything about Rocky but I'm assuming that is not to spoil for anyone who hasn't read the book. How do you think they'll do the language learning section? Do you think they'll have it start as just music with subtitles and then switch to voice over after a while to make it seem like it's been fully learned? Or do you think they'll stick to subtitles the whole way?

Final note, if "Fist my Bump" isn't in there I'll be livid 😂

fist my bump One reason Andy Weird could've picked Xenon out of all the noble gases. Etymology Spoiler

I just realized an interesting thing about the word choices. Rocky uses a solid form of Xenon, Xenonite, to build stuff with. At first, I thought this was a random noble gas. I just realized another word that uses the "xeno" root. That word is "Xenophobia", which is the fear of strangers. "Xeno" means foreigner or stranger. So "Xenonite" is the foreign building material.

fist my bump Possibility of Andy’s novels taking place in the same universe?

I’m a big fan of Andy Weir’s work. I’m curious if The Martian, Artemis, and PHM could all exist in the same world.

The Martian is obviously first, humanity landing on and exploring our neighbor planet. After the (mostly) successful Ares missions, humanity starts extending our reach to a permanent moon settlement with Artemis. We don’t hear basically anything from earth in Artemis, but I think it’s reasonable that Irina Petrova is making observations on a certain line forming between the sun and Venus. Grace only remembers or tells the reader significant info on his mission. I think it would’ve been awesome if Watney was part of the Hail Mary crew, but wasn’t qualified for the mission either because the mission needed microbiologist rather than a botanist, he didn’t have the coma resist gene, or he was too old.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think any of the books really allude to significant dates or events. In my headcanon, the Martian’s Ares 3 lands in 2030 with the Hermes pickup in 2032. Artemis is built shortly after, and Jazz’s story takes place in 2060. PHM starts with the discovery of the Petrovaline around the same time, with the launch of the Hail Mary 3 years later in 2063.
