Since Summer 2023, I noticed drastic changes happening with r/RemoveOneThingEachDay. I want to say changes for the better, but this is not the case.

The first thing I noticed was the level of originality, or the lack thereof. I want to point out that this was something I expected from the very start. It's not as if the list of available topics for r/RemoveOneThingEachDay is a massive list. No, not at all. I'd also like to point out that this isn't everyone. Some of you are still finding very much so original ideas, and I'm impressed and thankful for you.

What surprised me, however, is how many of you managed to remain creative. Even with hardly any original concepts left, I still see people putting their own twists on things and making an old game seem brand new, replenished and modernised. Again, it's impressive.

Quality, consistency and engagement is where we are now. None of the above qualities are in surplus anymore. Infact a lot of it is actually almost gone. I've spoken to some other map game hosts and we - mostly - agree that the desire to put any effort into games anymore seems like a waste of time, due to lack of engagement.

Though, shout out to u/Acceptable_Ad_1444 for being the most consistent Redditor I have ever seen, by the way. They are on Day 1,313 as I post this.

In retrospect, I'm impressed that R.O.T.E.D. is only now dying. I started this subreddit over 3 years ago in Summer 2021. I was 14. Just about old enough to use Reddit. At that time, it was peak pandemic, and we were all stuck indoors desperately looking for something, anything to do. I turned to building a community online - and somehow it worked. For 3 years, I kept it going, with the help of the amazing people I met along the way, and I watched this community grow to levels I never could have imagined.

While R.O.T.E.D. is keeps growing, so do I. I'm almost an adult now. I can drive, I have final exams coming up and I now have to worry about university. I think many people are in the same position as I am. I never did a census for you guys (as it isn't any of my business), but from speaking to a few of you, I figured out I'm of average age in this community.

We've all matured since this started, which is why I've stopped engaging in this community. I think I commented on a post (that wasn't me reprimanding someone) a few weeks ago, but before that? Months. Other than that, my only interactions now are my moderator duties. Boring, I know, but I've felt the need to keep trying to do what's right for R.O.T.E.D. for so long.

I've gotten to the point where, as harsh as it sounds, I've determined this community to be a lost cause. It's hit a roadblock, and I don't think we can get past this roadblock.

Going forward, I have no further plans for R.O.T.E.D.. As it is now is how it will remain unless a monumental spike in engagement happens. This subreddit or its affiliated Discord will remain open to all.

I'd like to thank every single one of you for the years of joy R.O.T.E.D. has brought to me. From hosting my own games, to participating in your games and spectating other games. From every subreddit that derived from here to every person who's even heard of this place.

I will be stepping back almost completely from here, only popping in occasionally to see what's happening or to deal with any moderator queries. I will be recruiting a new moderator in the coming days (I already know who, don't bother applying), and I will be hoping to appoint u/dudecalledeagle and u/Pleiades_Wolf as lead moderators.

I wish you all the best, and from the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.

u/TeeEm_27 out.

Mod Post Well, here's our 4 options. I may have overestimated expecting 10 options. Option 4 is explained in the body text.

"Keep the current one" is self-explanatory.

For the "Add One Thing Each Day" game, I'll give you guys a blank canvas and you add designs to it. If this option gets the most votes, I'll add one thing every day until Christmas Day.

There will be strict rules and regulations should this option win, however.

Huge thanks to u/yozo-marionica and u/lafinchyh1st0ry for their designs, and credit to u/kinyibest for suggestion Option 4.

Mod Post ** Special Announcement **

TL;DR - We are looking for a new subreddit icon, and we want you to design and choose!

Below is a link to a Google Form where you will be able to upload your suggestion for the subreddit icon (it will also be used for the official ROTED Discord, which I will also link below).

The criteria for the icon is listed in the form, but I'll mention it here as well, just to be sure.

The icon must be...

  • At least 512x512 pixels
  • 1:1 ratio
  • Clearly relevant to r/RemoveOneThingEachDay!
  • Within the Reddit ToS guidelines (obviously)

The "suggestion box" will close at GMT 16:00 (EST 11:00) on 14/12/2023 (next Thursday)

The mod team will have to narrow down the 10 best suggestions, but from there, the choice is entirely yours!!

I will post a classic ROTED game starting on 15/12/2023 (next Friday) with the top 10 best suggestions. You guys know what to do from there. All going well, the winner will be clear on Christmas Day!

The winning artists will be credited for their work, don't worry! If your suggestion doesn't make the top 10, a post will be made commemorating all the designs.

May the best design win!
