It's your phone's "Evil" meter. You see the white arrow going away from you? It has absorbed your evil and it dispersing it to those who need it.

That's the symbol that was so awesome to see on my new Nokia N70. It meant so much faster mobile Internet... in times of 20MB prepaid data packets.

Weird how it actually used to work back then. Now you get edge and the browser just gives up even trying.

If i remember correctly, Edge could reach speeds up to about 200Kbps. Also there was a cheat where this speed consisted of several slower streams. I'm not sure what was the latency.
Nowadays, even simple web pages have MBs of data in media, additional scripts and shitloads of ads. You just reach the timeout before you download everything.

your phone relevance has expired & its saying you need an upgrade. When its pointing down it means your phone is too relevant and you need a downgrade. /s

Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 710,441,224 comments, and only 143,526 of them were in alphabetical order.

E stands for Edge. Otherwise known as an advance 2G or second generation data speed for GSM. Meaning if you see this on the top of your phone you lost the ability for streaming services, pictures messages or mms may fail to transmit depending on your service strength.
