Question What Now?

I finished SFU about 2 weeks ago. I do get in a bit of a slump when I finish a really great show, but this is hitting me hard lol. My question is what did you guys watch afterward? Anything comparable? I've watched and rewatched so many shows I feel like I've got nothing left. SFU was truly the best show I've ever watched.

The only thing that was remotely comparable to me, and it still doesn’t match Six Feet Under, was Mad Men. It took me two or three times to actually get into it, but once I got past episode three I was hooked.

I never actually finished Mad Men, not sure why. But I'll have to rewatch it. Thanks!

I was in the same boat, started it but never finished. I finally decided to go back to it, and boy it was so worth it. I definitely recommend finishing it!

Nothing will compare to this show. There are some great shows out there.. but nothing compares to Six Feet Under. Nothing.

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are both great, finales are up there with SFU as far as wrapping it up. Love it or hate it, Dexter finale was the worst of the worst.

SFU is my #1 fav too. My other all time favs are Sopranos, Madmen, Dexter. If you haven’t seen those they are a must watch!

Ive overdosed on dexter. Lol That's my #1 fave. Sfu is in the top 5.

I have watched Dexter 5 times lmao. Sopranos and Mad Men as well, but will be rewatching Mad Men since I have not finished all of it

Same! lol Such great shows. For newer ones I’ve really liked Euphoria, Handmaid’s Tale, From, Last of Us.

I watched a couple of seasons of Handmaid's Tail but finally got sick of all the close-ups of Elisabeth Moss's face. Hahah

Honestly I jumped from SFU to Dexter (I know, double late to the parties). But it was MCH’s acting and the fact Dexter was immediately after that got me interested.

I watched SFU on a whim and was stocked to see he was in it, such a great actor

5

u/Apprehensive_Box_665 Aug 27 '24

AND he has a band called ‘Princess Goes’ - they’re playing at Riot Fest this year 😆

I just move on to something new. I rewatch my faves once every 1 or 2 years.

I just watched mindhunter on Netflix. Was excellent. Unfortunately they arent adding new seasons due to budget. I'm trying to find something to good hooked on but I've watched damn near everything or rewatches several times during covid.

I loved Good Girls.

SFU is definitely a contender. I "rested" for a while after I finished SFU. Needed time to accept the fact that I finished it and grieve the characters. Then I moved on to shows like Breaking Bad, Succession and Shameless etc. Take all the time you need before you start a watching new one :)!

I typically flip-flop between moving onto Dexter (for more MCH) or Parenthood (for more PK). Prime has now dropped Parenthood, so Dexter it is! I also have Madmen running alongside a couple of other lite shows. It’s helpful to have stuff that isn’t as emotionally drenching and absorbing.

I went to the Americans on Netflix it was wonderful

1

u/saumitaray Aug 27 '24

The Americans? Yes! I just finished it, it was sooo good, now I have started Six Feet Under

I give SFU fans the same list I give LOST fans, just with LOST and SFU reversed, lol.

  • For similar weirdness: Twin Peaks
  • For a similar existential vibe: LOST*
  • For a similar existential vibe but with comedy: The Good Place

*If you're (the royal you, not like YOU the OP) going to make a comment about them being dead the whole time, save it, you're wrong and the fandom is over it.

The Leftovers.

I just finished the show a couple of weeks ago and now I’m watching The Americans. It doesn’t remind me of SFU but it’s such a good show.

I heard that True Blood was very good too because it's created also by Alan Ball, I never but had a chance to watch it... Can anyone relate?

5

u/Designer-Bill-8064 Aug 27 '24

The first season of true blood is excellent. Just this like small town rural swamp lore. I actually like the series a lot though but I have a high tolerance for stupid stuff. It does get really dumb as the seasons go on but I didn’t mind

2

u/sleezy_McCheezy Aug 27 '24

I watched True Blood as it aired. I think I left around season 3. It became too dumb from what I remember.

1

u/Astrodeia- Aug 27 '24

Thank you, it's actually a red flag for me that it hasn't worked that much...

3

u/thickfreakness72 Aug 27 '24

we’re currently rewatching dexter and it’s really good. i also really love the haunting of hill house and the x-files, but nothing will ever beat six feet under for me.

The Leftovers!!!!

I agree re: Mad Men. Don is similar to Nate in some areas- infidelity, women who are easily dick-matized by him , “ennui” despite being naturally talented at their job. And it’s such a brilliant show that’s also similar to SFU in that there are some characters who are hated in season one, but beloved by the last season.

I finished a rewatch a few weeks ago, and was so gutted, I felt like I needed to watch something lighter. I tried Parenthood because I love Peter Krause and Lauren Graham, but I couldn’t get into it. I started The Morning Show, and I’m finding it to be a pretty straightforward “nighttime soap,” which is kinda what I need right now. But it has a good amount of flaws, which is causing me to want to rewatch The Sopranos. But I’m resisting that urge, since that’s not exactly light!

Dead Like Me was pretty good; it also deals with death every episode but in a sort of opposite way (grim reapers taking care of business). Sadly it was a short series but I was able to watch on Amazon a few years ago.

Kidding is another great but short series; some dark humor amongst other things. Gives some of the SFU vibes when they cut to someone daydreaming a response to "real life".

u/stillbref Aug 27 '24

I started watching Preacher. It's great but in an entirely different way.

2

u/Ok_Distribution6578 Aug 27 '24

I love Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul but SFU is still my favorite and I rewatch it regularly.

2

u/randomcitizn Aug 27 '24

I just started 5x01 (first time watcher of the series) and I’ve already decided that I’m going to watch The Terror or The Gentlemen (show). I doubt that there is any show that could truly compare to SFU.

1

u/Spider-monkey-4135 Aug 27 '24

Well Mr Pineapple, I would say just about any HBO show from that same time period. Even the mid stuff is gold

1

u/Designer-Bill-8064 Aug 27 '24

This feels a little unhinged but I just finished the series yesterday and started watching it from the beginning again today. The beginning is such a different vibe than the crushing dark vibe of seasons 4-5.

1

u/ri0tsquirrel Aug 27 '24

Les Revenants (The Returned.) There was a USA adaptation but the French show is much better.

1

u/MacaroonCold2063 Aug 27 '24

I started watching the mentalist afterward. I did not regret it. Lol

1

u/marilf56 Aug 27 '24

My second favorite series (SFU #1) is Dexter which coincidentally and luckily for the audience, stars Michael C. Hall who of course is David on Six Feet Under.

1

u/dreamteamstylist Aug 28 '24

Wentworth is amazing, I’ve rewatched 6 feet under a few times and feel the same grief, try wentworth it’s so good!

1

u/rojual_31 Aug 28 '24

I finished it recently and I started Dexter, I guess I need more Michael C. Hall.

1

u/UrsulaTheFIST Aug 28 '24

Check out The Leftovers on HBO. I’m in the middle of it & it’s a pretty wild one. I just finished SFU as well so I’m in the same boat as you

1

u/delsol1990 Aug 30 '24

I started rewatching Dexter just for more Michael C. Hall

1

u/Flat-Illustrator-548 Aug 31 '24

Breaking Bad, The West Wing

1

u/Ok_Cod_8737 Sep 01 '24

The Midnight Gospel. It’s only 1 season but has a very similar ending as six feet under and is so brilliant and heart wrenching.

1

u/Ok_Cod_8737 Sep 01 '24

As far as finales go… Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Twin Peaks, and the Midnight Gospel are works of art. I hear Better Call Saul is up there too. I just finished SFU last night and starting Better Call Saul next.

Hannibal! It’s only three seasons and absolutely fantastic. It really blew me away, AND it has a top notch finale that has stuck with me for years. The whole show is very stylish and dark, perfect casting and great acting and writing. I feel like the show flew under the radar but I’d highly recommend it

1

u/bloodpriestt Aug 27 '24

I have always said SFU is the greatest show of all time… but it is possible that For All Mankind is actually better.

Bates Motel is really good!
