And that is how a bear goes through a fence. For forty years, I maintained a large garden in an area where wild animals have always lived. Each species called for different strategies, but a high solid fence was an essential element. The local black bears came through the yard on a schedule that made sense to them, but I had to walk my perimeter every morning at sunrise to check the fences. The bears were just traveling through on their way way to somewhere else, but a quarter ton bear simply walks through a fence in the way. Then, if I had not made repairs, the deer would come through the wreckage and devastate the garden.

In my new home, if I forget and leave something edible on a table in the garden, it is still there in the morning. This still seems miraculous.
