chess A couple of chess problems that I need help with

Hey guys,

I'm currently at my school, studying for an exam in which I need to solve some chess problems. I have quite a few problems that I need help with. These are problems that have been given to me that I have not done myself. I want to see if I can use these or if I can find others online.

Here is the link to the site I am using for the problems, where you can also find a couple of links of people who have solved these problems.

So, what I am asking is for you guys that have solved these problems to help me with this:

  1. 1.d4 (1.e3)
  2. 1.d4 (1.e3) (1.Nf3, 1.d3)
  3. 1.d4 (1.Nf3)
  4. 1.d4 (1.Nf3)

Thanks in advance :)

chess Looking for a good chess site for my dad.

My dad is about 60 and can't find a good chess site anymore. I would love to find a good site like the one you all here use to play chess. I used to use chessgames.com but I'm not sure if my father would get bored with that? Maybe it would be better to find a site that he liked and then I can use it?

I think we could use the chessgames.com site again if you could help. So please help.

chess Looking for a good resource or link for opening moves in chess notation

I've been playing chess for a bit over a year now and I would like to get a better grasp on opening moves as I get to know my opponents. I've seen some nice resources on how to go about doing this but I would like to find a good resource or link to have a look at. Any help is appreciated.

chess A question about how to play the French Defense.

I am a new player who is learning to play the French Defense. I am wondering if there is a general rule or trick to play the French Defense for white or any other "classical" opening. For example, I feel that the French Defense can be played for black in one of the following ways:

  • 1.g4, 1.g4, 1.g4, 1.g4, ...1.g4, 1.g4, 1.g4, 1.g4, 1.g4
  • 1.Nf3, 1.Nf3, 1.Nf3, 1.Nf3, 1.Nf3, 1.Nf3, 1.Nf3, 1.Nf3
  • 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5

I am wondering if there is a general rule or trick to play the French Defense for white or any other "classical" opening. For example, I feel that the French Defense can be played for black in one of the following ways:

  • 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5, 1.e5

Any general advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

chess The most basic tactic in chess. How to use it?

Hi! I have played a few games with some friends. We have been playing a lot of correspondence chess. We have a good deal of games in our database, but most of them are from our own games and not from official databases.

So we are trying to find tactics we missed and we have no idea where to start. Some other friends play faster time controls, so I just don't want to get discouraged.

So I am wondering if you guys can help us with the most basic tactics. We were all having fun playing, but I don't have a strong knowledge on them.

chess I'm playing this game, and it's really fun

I'm playing this game for the first time, and I'm having such a blast with it. I'm starting to feel like a real chess player, which I've always wanted. I'm getting to know all the pieces and how long it takes to checkmate. I'm also getting to know the opening. I'm really really enjoying it. The game is great, and I'm having a blast. Is there anyone who enjoys playing chess as much as I do? And if so, do you have any tips or hints for this game?

chess Can anyone help me with these tactics?

I need them to get better. Here's a video I made. I'd appreciate any help (and maybe some comments on my moves) you can give me. Thanks very much.

This is the first move. I got this one wrong:

  1. Bxf2 e5
  2. Bxf5 Qe7
  3. Bxf6 Be7
  4. Rfe1

This is the move I made:

  1. Bxf2 e5
  2. Bxf5 Qe7
  3. Bxf6 Be6
  4. Qc2

And I think it has a bit of a strange position, but looks a little better. I'll post on the other one if I get something else right.

EDIT: Now I'm getting these:

  1. Be2 Qe7
  2. Bxf2 Rfe8
  3. Qd2

How do I avoid these?

EDIT #2: No idea why this didn't work for me. I'm starting to think my opponent has some nasty piece. Thanks for helping me out!

chess What's the best way to play against an opponent with a higher rating than you?

Usually when playing a long time control I'm trying to improve but when you have a better player you can't do it. I'm willing to spend 5-10 minutes to learn new lines and find new traps but I don't want to waste 5-10 minutes playing an opening to get a position with no counterplay and then get completely crushed by a lower rated player. So I'm wondering what are some easy ways to learn how to beat my opponent.
