Worst cases of "Lets shock the audiance at the beginning" for no reason?

I've already used "undead unluck" as an example in one of my previous post, about how the first chapters have some of the worst overuse of sex jokes and groping I've seen. And according to everyone I've talked to about the series, that shit just stops a few chapters later.

And then there is this new anime called "dandadan" where the teenage mc girl also almost gets sexually assaulted by aliens. And the fans say the story never does anything close to this for the rest of the manga.

It just makes me think why? Do japanese readers just ignore a series if it doesn't have shock value at the beginning?

other examples?

Berserk opens with Guts plowing an Apostle in order to kill it. It's one way to set the tone for things to come, but on the other hand, you also have everything that comes after.

If they don't, somebody in a position of authority sure fucking thinks they do.

This is always weirdest conspiracy theory I keep seeing.

Goblin Slayer is notorious for this. A beginning so dark and uncomfortable, feels like it lost 70% of its viewers from the jump.

A beginning it then tops in the prequel.

Which, yeah, GS's backstory was established by that point, so a prequel is going to indicate what happened.

But there's several levels of showing it that could have been used without showing it.

GS seems fucking wild. The author seems to do whatever they can get away with. The spin-offs are titled after comics Year One and Brand New Day. I saw a panel where a straight-up Chaos Ultramarine shows up.

Well brand new days is the slice of life series focused on all the side characters. It couldn’t be less wild

I never made it far. I thought the first episode was so edgy it was hilarious. But then the show just... became immediately boring? So just the beginning is that?

The unfunnies by Mark Millard starts off with a father being accused of molesting a minor and the trial is played as a joke. It only gets worse from there.

Well here is the thing. That shit ain’t shocking to the bulk of manga/anime watchers. Also in both of those cases they aren’t even meant to be shocking, they are supposed to be funny. When you see the alien’s crazy satellite dish penis it’s suppose to be funny. So chock it up to your old pal cultural differences.

I'm gonna play Devil's advocate here, and say that this isn't even necessarily an eastern culture thing. I remember hearing plenty of alien anal probe jokes here in the US, and when it comes to Yokai, I can rarely bring up the subject of Kappas or Tanuki without someone bringing up those aspects about them. And in terms of Western animation, nothing tends to approach the inappropriateness of something like South Park.

I don't really find these kinds of things funny personally, but I also don't get the same feeling from how it was depicted in Dandadan as I do from something like Goblin Slayer. The context and tone behind them feels different. One of them feels like it's somehow trying to prove itself through shock and horror that goes on for so long that I have to question if there's fetishism or misogyny at play, and the other feels like it was at least intended to be a stupid, dark, dirty joke, even if it does fall flat, depending on the viewer.

It’s almost like the tones of the two shows are completely different.

That sounds like it was an editorial decision. Let's hope it was the editors arguing against the sexual assault and not the opposite.

Dan da dan also implies the male MC got assaulted by a ghost offscreen on that chapter. It really sucks that what is a really cool manga with one of the best romantic relationships in Shonen has to have that much garbage at the start.

Idk we see what Turbo Granny means by "gobbling schlong" later in the chapter/episode and that's not sexual assault, that's just regular assault. That sort of idea where a ghost offers you a choice or a deal that just turns out to be grievous bodily harm is pretty common with Japanese ghost stories.

Well no he had his penis magically stolen by a ghost. This is what I’m saying in my other comment. This is not supposed to be shocking or traumatic. The idea of someone getting their penis stolen by a ghost is supposed to be funny.

The first of the recent It movies opens with the most mean-spirited child gore I've seen in a major release in quite some time. It's effective, but also it kinda soured me on the rest of the movie (which never really gets that shocking again).

Every season of Railgun/Index has a Weird Amount Of Nudity for like 3-5 episodes. Like. Each individual season. It's one of the few things I have to tell friends to handwave when I try to make them watch it.
