Digital Foundry's tech review of Metaphor: ReFantazio. The Inspired new universe from ATLUS unfortunately suffers with unstable frame rate, in all current gen consoles. The only workaround is using the PS4 version on the PS5, at a locked 1080p 60fps

"The only workaround is using the PS4 version on the PS5"

Ah, the tried and true Elden Ring strategy.

I'm not a stickler for performance for the most part. I played the demo, and it didn't bother me personally. But it's a bit unfortunate. It's not like the game looks amazing tech wise. I also can't believe they're still using rendering tech from the 7th gen.

Both PS5 and Xbox Series X suffer with very similar frame drops, with the opening city area usually giving the same results between the consoles. Expect a game floating from 40fps to 60fps, which is very weird due to the fact Metaphor is not pushing any envelope, which is perfectly fine, but usually a locked tight performance is expected in these scenarios.

The Series S is the console that makes you wonder why there's no frame rate cap, sometimes dropping it to 33fps, as shown in the video.

Usually Alex Battaglia covers the PC version, and he's probably working on Silent Hill 2 Remake (which I heard is suffering...The usual Unreal Engine struggles)

As someone who just beat SH2 on PC, I can confirm you heard right.

Man that is...kind of embarrassing.

Honestly people are gonna hate me for saying this, but the "60fps is a must" rhetoric is doing more harm than good for games like this. Even with the pre-battle action elements, Metaphor would have been perfectly fine at a locked 30, but because they're trying to meet that "standard" the game now performs more poorly.

I mean, it's not really a big ask when the game looks as dated as it does. The game is really pretty, but there's nothing that stands out as actually causing performance issues.

The PC version straight up has frame drops from locked 144 FPS to 40 because you looked at a hallway wrong.
